John Aubrey Pugh, an Oxford don who has given up his teaching post and come to live in a secluded Welsh valley, falls in love with Bronwen Vaughan, the wife of a young farmer who is his neighbour. She is estranged from her husband, an admirable man in many ways, but one who has compelled her to submit to some brutal sexual perversion. When a famous preacher, whose advances Bronwen has rejected with contempt, persuades the entire community that she has committed adultery with Pugh, a reckoning is inevitable.

Everything about Picasso, except his physical stature, was on an enormous scale. His appetite for sex and money, eating and drinking, friends and quarrels, comedy and tragedy, are legendary. No artist of the first rank has been so aw-inspiringly productive. No artist of any rank has made so much money. A few artists have rivalled his life-span of ninety years, but none has attracted so insatiable a public interest. Patrick O’Brian, author of the famous Aubrey-Maturin novels, was a near neighbour of Picasso’s in the south of France for many years and knew him well.

As Captain Jack Aubrey cools his heels in a Maltese harbour, awaiting repairs to his ship, war rages on. Fearing that hostilities will end before he has any further opportunities for fame and fortune, Aubrey accepts several secret missions, but all is not as it seems.

Jack Aubrey’s long service has at last been rewarded with promotion to the rank of commodore, and a squadron of ships to command. His new commission is twofold – first, inhibit the slave trade off the coast of West Africa, and then, on his return, intercept a French fleet loaded with weapons intended for the disaffected Irish.

Käpt'n Jack Aubrey ist ausnahmsweise an Land glücklich, den er hat geheiratet. Aber er ist auch unglücklich: Er hat kein Schiff. Doch Stephen Maturin kann hinter den Kulissen helfend eingreifen und Jack wird Kommodore. Er soll mit einem Geschwader Mauritius von den Franzosen erobern. Die ihm unterstellten Kapitäne, sture Admiräle, der Nachschub und die Angst, dass andere ihm den Ruhm für das Erreichte streitig machen könnten, machen ihm Probleme. Und das Hauptproblem sind natürlich die Franzosen auf Mauritius und La Réunion.

Nach seiner Zeit in Mauritius (siehe Episode 4: "Geheimauftrag Mauritius") erhält Jack Aubrey ein Landkommando bei der Miliz, was ihm Gelegenheit gibt, sich auf seine Art um sein Vermögen zu kümmern. Durch einen Wechsel in der Spitze des Marine-Ministeriums erhält Kapitän Jack Aubrey nicht das Prisengeld in der erwarteten Höhe, was seine Heirat mit Sophia verhindert - und Stephen Maturin gerät durch eine Indiskretion in Folterhaft. Doch Jack erhält endlich das Schiff, das er am meisten mag: Die Fregatte HMS Surprise. Er soll einen britischen Botschafter nach Ostasien befördern. Stephen, der unglücklich Verliebte, hofft dort Diana wieder zu sehen, die sich bei ihrem reichen Beschützer aufhält.

Der Friede zwischen England und Frankreich "bricht aus": Die Matrosen freuen sich, aber die Offiziere sitzen buchstäblich auf dem Trockenen. Jack Aubrey hat Probleme mit der Admiralität, mit seinem Vermögen und in der Liebe pflegt er eine doppelte Moral. Jack Aubrey is a naval officer, a post-captain of experience and capacity. When The Letter of Marque opens he has been struck off the Navy List for a crime he has not committed. With Aubrey is his friend and ship's surgeon Stephen Maturin, who is also an unofficial British intelligence agent.

As war with Napoleon seemingly draws to a close, opportunities for advancement are limited and Jack Aubrey faces the ultimate indignity – the possibility of being ‘yellowed’, or retired, and set aside with no squadron of his own. But the blockade of Brest presents dangers to equal those of the furthest shores.
