河に浮かぶ死体を嘲笑して見物する群衆を描いた小品。死者への冒涜を怒りながら、衆愚と無縁でない己の内面を冷静にとらえている。いわゆる「啓吉もの」のひとつ。啓吉は菊池寛の分身だ。

菊池寛初期の短編小説。京都大学時代の経験も交えて書かれた面白い小説です。エゴイズムに対する辛辣な皮肉も込められた作品でもあります。 京都の疎水の描写も興味深い作品です。
