Story
The elite crew of the pirate ship UNS Flying Dutchman had a simple mission: determining whether the Thuranin are sending another starship to Earth. Along the way, they became sidetracked by securing a future for the UNEF troops on the planet Paradise. When asked whether Earth was now safe, their ancient alien AI responded "Not so much"...now they have to deal with the consequences.

Story
United Nations Special Operations Command sent an elite expeditionary force of soldiers and pilots out on a simple recon mission, and somehow along the way they sparked an alien civil war. Now the not-at-all-merry band of pirates is in desperate trouble, again. Their stolen alien starship is falling apart, thousands of light years from home. The ancient alien AI they nicknamed Skippy is apparently dead, and even if they can by some miracle revive him, he might never be the same.

Story
Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise and he's going to keep it; taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out. He doesn't agree when the UN decides to send almost 70 elite Special Operations troops, hotshot pilots, and scientists with him; the mission is a fool's errand he doesn't expect to ever return from. At least, this time, the Earth is safe, right? Not so much.

Story
After the Renegade mission by the crew of the starship Flying Dutchman, the UN Expeditionary Force thought Earth was safe for hundreds of years, at least. After there was trouble on the home front and the president had to authorize a nuclear strike on an American city, UNEF decided they did need the Merry Band of Pirates again. So, the Flying Dutchman is sent out on a simple recon mission. But for the pirates, nothing is ever simple, and their mission will become Armageddon.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Good book but should be cheaper as half a book
I really love this series but I would have liked to see some kind of discount for this instalment as it less than half the normal length of the main books for the same price. Was a good seaway from the main series and good to get to know some other characters more deeply.

Great, but.....
Great book in the series, a little more detail and insight to the other group of characters.
but, there's no Skippy and Bishop. Understandably as they're not with this group of humans at the moment, but the humor those two bring lift this series above the other space based sci-fi.

Should have been part of Book 3
Craig Alanson, please don't do this again. Don't take a side story, break it out and charge too much for it. This "book" should have been part of "Paradise." Did I enjoy this entry? Of course. It had RC Bray as narrator and Craig Alanson as its parent. But really, this feels like a wallet-grab. Craig, you have loyal followers. Don't gouge them or they will be less loyal.
As for the story, a nice subplot in the ongoing saga. Not up to the Joe/Skippy narrative, but good nevertheless. Neither Skippy or Joe are in think even. RC Bray is magnificent, as usual. And with this entry we flesh out more of the secondary characters. Perhaps knowing them better will become important in a future installment. I hope so.
Im still a fan. i just wish i didn't feel so dirty.
If you haven't read books 1-3, don't start here. But if you have read them, and you have splurge money, then go ahead.
But this felt like some editor or agent might have said: Take this side story out and repackage it as a standalone. You'll be able to sell it for a quick extra $20. Short-term strategy. Disrespectful to your fans. I'm pissed off that I paid $20+ for this "installment." Maybe $5.95. Really, should have been part of the Paradise book.
And yes, I'll buy the next bull-length installment. I love Col. Joe and Skippy.

Waste of a credit
I've enjoyed the series but this was nothing more than a gimmick. The plot with Joe and Skippy wasn't furthered at all and the book didn't even finish. There were several instances where it seemed the author rushed the story to meet a deadline. Author and publishers owe fans more. I just feel taken advantage of and won't be listening further.

1/2 Book for Full Price... I Felt Cheated
This is a new story arc, so I was barely able to get into it before it ended. While I knew that it was going to be a shortened book, I couldn't believe it when it ended after only 5 hours. I don't mind cliffhangers, but this one felt like it stopped at chapter 3. It felt like I got only 1/2 the book, but paid full price. Really frustrated at that.

36% of a book for 100% of a credit.
I really don't see the point of this mini-novel. 36% of the length of any of the others, kinda boring, and as repetitious as ever. Most surprisingly, you'd think a short for-profit-only Novella would have a decent ending. This little book seems like Craig Alanson just ran out of room on his SD card and had to stop. Rather disappointing.

Short story not a book
I love the story, disappointed this wasn't part of book 3. It should have been, felt too rushed and incomplete. One aspect of the series I enjoy, it makes me think (folding time space) I can see a story developing around Skippy where he could be anything from just an AI to a sentinel to an Elder's consciousness. Wonderful possibilities. While the story of Paradise needed told, it should have been part of book 3.

Still a great listen
Still a great story and, as a book, it's well worth a listen. The performance is great as always and, although telling a story that's parallel to the main plot that I have come to enjoy, it is a worthy 3.5 interim.
The problem with this audiobook is that it doesn't tie in well with the audible credit system.
This audiobook is certainly not worth the same as the others in the series; Being only a fraction of the length. It is a wonderful listen, although looking back I would not have used my credit as it is not required to enjoy book 4.
Great audiobook. Poor pricepoint for audible subscribers. Not required for book 4.

Short, and no Skippy??? What?
I know this is only book 3.5, but it still cost 1 credit and for that it's way too short. Great story and reading performance as usual, but no Skippy... that means 75% of the humour was missing. I assume the next half book will be free?

A So-So Escapade
Any additional comments?
The first three books are great; but let’s be honest, Expeditionary Force really is the ‘Skippy & Joe Show’. Without our protagonist duo, we are left following the shenanigans of the those stranded on the planet called Paradise. Although there is humour here, this tale felt rather flat without any Skippy & Joe interludes. I’m sure many die-hard fans will enjoy this escapade but for me it was just a little – how would Skippy put it? Meh?

This seem to me just to be a way to get even more money, calling a 3.5 just seem to be a bit of a rip off, with a price tag of £25 for a book that only last 5hrs seem a bit much.
That been said it was not a bad book and I only hope the next one will pick up form where this book stops.

Disappointed
Disappointed that the book has been split into two just to make more money. Very short book for the money!
Disappointed there's no Skippy!
Disappointing and quite boring!!

Not too impressed this time
I quite enjoyed these books until now. I didn't find this one engaged me, and didn't really feel like it was worthy of being a book in itself.
I usually end up listening to books a couple of times but I doubt I'll e returning to this one.

A Decent Filler.
This is a decent interlude between books 3 and 4 of the series. While Skippy the Magnificent fans from around the globe eagerly await his and Joe Bishop’s return to their most amusing sparring we are treated to some military sci-fi based back on Paradise. Robbed of its dynamic duo it’s fair to say that the story loses a little of its lustre but it’s still a good read and there is some great action and adventure still to be had. The humans on Paradise are not united with UNEF’s efforts to impress the Ruhar being undermined by the Keepers and of course living in constant threat of attack. The Ruhar don’t like or trust the humans and so UNEF is fighting a constant battle for credibility and ultimately survival.
There is still some humour of course, it’s not all action and UNEF soldiers teaching a young Ruhar cadet some of the subtleties of human body language did make me laugh out loud. Yes, it’s not big or clever but since when did that matter? The narration is by RC Bray and unless you’ve somehow never heard him before then you’ll know what that means. Should you be in that group of poor unfortunates who haven’t heard him yet then you are in for a treat . . . but take the series in order as this will lose an awful lot as a stand-alone.
So, a good short(ish) interlude that whets the appetite for Black Ops. The lack of Skippy and Joe means it doesn’t hit quite the same high notes as the other books in the series but I wouldn’t miss it out on that basis.
