About this listen

The Nervous System Solution is the book I needed but couldn’t find. A compassionate, embodied companion to the Twelve Steps, written not for the mind alone but for the parts of us that hold pain in our skin, our breath, and deep in our core. This isn’t about white-knuckling it or doing recovery the “right” way. It’s about softening, staying, and learning how to feel again: safely, slowly, and in your own time.

What unfolded as I wrote wasn’t a textbook or a treatment plan. It was a living experience, my own and others, of what recovery looks like when we stop trying to think our way through pain and begin to feel our way toward safety. In these words, the Twelve Steps are not only honored but reimagined through the language of the body. Each one becomes more than a principle; it becomes a shift in the nervous system. Step One becomes the exhale of finally admitting, “I can’t do this alone.” Step Four becomes a trembling, honest return to the body’s memory. Step Nine becomes a healing that begins before the apology in the regulation of breath, tone, and presence.

This is recovery that honors trauma. That sees relapse not as a weakness but as the body’s desperate call for safety. That treats nervous system overwhelm not as an obstacle to healing but as the very place where healing begins. It’s not linear. It’s not tidy. But it’s real. And it’s enough.

I didn’t write this book as a clinician or an expert. I wrote it as someone in recovery, someone who had to learn, again and again, how to stay. These chapters carry stories, reflections, and somatic practices that helped me and others build a different kind of sobriety, one that’s felt in the breath, in the gut, in the way we soften into safety. Not just in time passed but in presence gained.
