Shortly after 9.30 in the morning, a young man walks into Surf City, Bondi’s newest shopping complex. He’s wearing a dark grey hoodie - and a bomb around his neck.
Just a few minutes later, he is locked in a shop on the upper floor. And trapped with him are four innocent bystanders.
For police chaplain Paul Doherty, called to the scene by Senior Sergeant Boehm, it’s a story that will end as tragically as it began. For this is clearly no ordinary siege. The boy, known as Ali Khan, seems as frightened as his hostages and has yet to utter a single word.
The seconds tick by for the five in the shop: Mitchell, the talented schoolboy; Mouse, the shop assistant; Kimmi, the nail-bar technician; and Roger Callaghan, the real estate agent whose reason for being in Bondi that day is far from innocent.
And, of course, there’s Ali Khan. Is he the embodiment of evil, as the villagers in his Tanzanian birthplace believe? Or just an innocent boy, betrayed at every turn, who just wants a place to call home?

slower-paced but worth it
some seige stories are full of action, but this story is told afterwards, reflectively, respectfully, by a young priest. I liked that it was told from his perspective, I liked his voice and the narration. The accents were a bit off, but it was minor. This was deeply moving, and in the last few seconds I felt the horror in the pit of my stomach, when it ended I wanted to yell or to cry. I want the author to know that I enjoyed their book, amd it will stay with me for a long time to come.

Reasonable story.
Bit of a sad story. Not bad, easy enough to follow. Interesting topic. Finished it but did not totally draw me in.

My heart went out to Ali Mitchel and Rat and the father ...I Would have brought the father dinner for a month if he had punched Roger in the head 10 times
And to burry a child is like having your heart ripped out of your chest put into pieces and told to keep going my son 3 months 6 days 1984 Basically yesterday 😭😭😭

Love her work. A bit underdone.
Kept me engaged but got bogged down a little in the minutia of character building.
I'm guessing it was an earlier piece of writing as the usual plot twists were lacking.
