Publisher's Summary

Caroline Overington's best seller is a heart-breaking, utterly compelling novel of a family ripped apart.

It was four o'clock in the morning. A young woman pushed through the hospital doors. Staff would later say they thought the woman was a new mother, returning to her child - and in a way, she was.

She walked into the nursery, where a baby girl lay sleeping. The infant didn't wake when the woman placed her gently in the shopping bag she had brought with her. There is CCTV footage of what happened next, and most Australians would have seen it, either on the internet or the news.

The woman walked out to the car park, towards an old Corolla. For a moment, she held the child gently against her breast and, with her eyes closed, she smelled her. She then clipped the infant into the car, got in and drove off.

That is where the footage ends. It isn't where the story ends, however. It's not even where the story starts.

struggled

this book was quite frustrating on many levels. the drool of the reader. the hidden social messages that the author tried to highlight were wrong on so many levels. I usually enjoy this author but don't waste your time on this one.

Wonderful

From the minute the narrator started the story I knew it was my kind of book. So truthful and could be anyone of us

Steer clear.

Well there’s almost 8 hrs I’ll never get back.

I know that people like the parents exist in society, but goodness me. Antivaxxer expert appearing on behalf of the patents in court as an expert witness was a little to much. Who takes a pocket knife to court? The spiralling mental health issues of the mother was again something I didn’t need to know.

I found the choice of nickname for the mother of the child somewhat offensive as well. What father in his right mind would deem it appropriate to call his daughter “Fat” as a term of endearment?

Not on my list of favourite of all time.

Caroline knows

This is the 4th book of Caroline’s I’ve read. Such a powerful study of a family trying to work their way thru travails and government systems. So well observed

A view into the complexities of a social change.

Could not stop listening.
Told through The eyes of the main characters. A thought provoking struggle of one Ausie Battler family.

tear jerker

couldn't stop listening to this story. Touched my heart and made me tear up. I am certain there are many cases in the real world that exist like this. it is important to love, forgive and make the most of your situation.

Very disappointing. Struggled to finish.

I only finished this because I was in the car with nothing else to listen to. No idea how it got such good reviews. I know the narration is 'in character' but it was awful. And for goodness sake, calling the characters Pat. Kat and Fat? Seriously? The points of the story are ok but the first half drags, and the performance really let's it down. Pass.
