Story
Antigone is a famous Greek tragedy attributed to the ancient playwright Sophocles at around 440 BCE. The play expands on the Theban legend of Oedipus that predates it, dealing with Antigone’s burial of her brother Polyneices in defiance of the law and the tragic results of her act. On another level, the play exposes the dangers of the absolute ruler or tyrant in the character of Creon. No one speaks freely to him, so he makes a series of mistakes, illustrating the folly of tyranny.

Story
Ned West dreams of sailing across the river on a boat of his very own. To Ned, a boat means freedom–the fresh open water, squid-rich reefs, fires on private beaches–a far cry from life on Limberlost, the family farm, where his father worries and grieves for Ned's older brothers. They're away fighting in a ruthless and distant war, becoming men on the battlefield, while Ned–too young to enlist–roams the land in search of rabbits to shoot, selling their pelts to fund his secret boat ambitions. But as the seasons pass and Ned grows up, real life gets in the way.

Publisher's Summary
Isma is free. After years spent raising her twin siblings in the wake of their mother's death, she is finally studying in America, resuming a dream long deferred. But she can't stop worrying about Aneeka, her beautiful, headstrong sister back in London - or their brother, Parvaiz, who's disappeared in pursuit of his own dream: to prove himself to the dark legacy of the jihadist father he never knew.
Then Eamonn enters the sisters' lives. Handsome and privileged, he inhabits a London worlds away from theirs. As the son of a powerful British Muslim politician, Eamonn has his own birthright to live up to - or defy. Is he to be a chance at love? The means of Parvaiz's salvation?
Two families' fates are inextricably, devastatingly entwined in this searing novel that asks: what sacrifices will we make in the name of love? A contemporary reimagining of Sophocles' Antigone, Home Fire is an urgent, fiercely compelling story of loyalties torn apart when love and politics collide - confirming Kamila Shamsie as a master storyteller of our times.

Haunting
This one had me from the start, and kept me on the edge of my seat through to the Noah. I have listened twice now and will likely go for a third.

Wow. Incredible, powerful, chilling.
Themes of love, family, terrorism, politics and the constant struggle for identity are threaded throughout Shamsie's modern retelling of the Greek tragedy Antigone.
Disturbingly, the ancient tragedy plays out well in its current day setting.
Through each character's point of view, Shamsie reveals the complexity and uniqueness of the individual that's otherwise hidden behind religious, political and cultural stereotypes.
I couldn't stop listening - it's a compelling storyline, full of characters I became completely invested in, and is brought to life with excellent narration.
I've just finished and my heart is still pounding. A brilliant, heart wrenching, challenging book.
Highly, highly recommended.

Interesting read - not at all predictable
If you could sum up Home Fire in three words, what would they be?
Different, though provoking
What other book might you compare Home Fire to, and why?
Not sure this work could be compared to any other.
What does Tania Rodrigues bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
There was a perspective of a class of people that was quite unfamiliar to me. It was interesting to understand the impact of the sins of the father. It would be great if the story was expanded in some way in order for the reader to understand the history of the family.
Any additional comments?
Quite worth the time. Great characters, well written and plausible.

From another perspective
It was refreshing to read a story from other than the standard Western (priveledged) perspective.
It was a challenging read at times but very worthwhile.
This would make a powerful film.
