Story
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.

Story
As a young girl growing up in a strict ultra-Orthodox family, Dassi's life was preordained - marry young, live a devout life and raise children within the Adass community's religious rules. This righteous path would keep her safe from the immodest, secular world just a few blocks away in suburban Melbourne. But the Adass community was not safe for Dassi. She was fifteen when her revered school principal, Malka Leifer, started to single her out. Dassi's cloistered and harsh upbringing meant she didn't have the words for what was happening to her, but she knew it was very, very wrong.

Tara Westover and her family grew up preparing for the End of Days but, according to the government, she didn’t exist. She hadn’t been registered for a birth certificate. A ‘jagged little patch of Idaho’ = a remarkable story of transformation
The multiple layers of this book are simultaneously bared and interwoven in a way which is very accessible despite most likely being beyond any frame of reference available to most readers.
There is a restrained steadiness in the telling of the story which is effective in keeping the reader engaged for the entire journey.
Westover’s personal journey and accomplishments are truly remarkable, particularly when set against the backdrop of her family life and circumstances, in that ‘jagged little patch of Idaho.’

vivid narrative
It was my first audio book ever and I loved it. One of the highlights for me is the vivid narrative, descriptions that you can see, and a overarching theme of how education touches lives.

Masterfully written. Brutally honest
This story is so powerful, raw and inspiring. Confronting, but in a way that I think many people can identify with. A great listen!

Emotional Investment
Not an easy book to stomach but so provoking and meaningful. I felt my heart leap out of my chest on several occasions at the horror and mental turmoil of her experiences. It was a slow start but I couldn't put it down by the end.

Absolutely enthralling
The first nonfiction I’ve read in a while. I found it captivating and was looking for every spare minute to listen to more of the story. It takes you to a reality so far from common experience, you easily forget it’s a biography.
