Even her personal relationships make her feel as if she's simply drifting through life rather than living it to the full. Her godmother Luna, who leads a very simple existence in a rustic cottage in the North Queensland rainforest, is also at something of a crossroads. Keen to expand her jewellery-making business, she needs the new connections that a bustling city offers. When she suggests to Tess that the two of them might swap homes for an extended period, it seems the perfect solution.

Story
Dolly Jamieson is not homeless, she's merely between permanent abodes. The 78-year-old spends her days keeping warm at the local library, where she enjoys sparring with the officious head librarian and helping herself to the free morning tea. It's not so bad, really. But it's certainly a far cry from the 1960s, when this humble girl from Geelong became an international star of the stage. As the acclaimed lead in the Broadway production of The Rose of France, all Dolly's dreams had come true. So how, in her old age, did she end up here?

Publisher's Summary
Can love and friendship blossom on a rooftop?
The residents in Brisbane's Riverview apartment block barely know each other. They have no idea of the loneliness, the lost hopes and dreams, being experienced behind their neighbours' closed doors.
Vera, now widowed, is trying her hardest to create a new life for herself in an unfamiliar city environment. Unlucky-in-love Maddie has been hurt too many times by untrustworthy men yet refuses to give up on romance. Ned, a reclusive scientist, has an unusual interest in bees and worm farms. Meanwhile, the building's caretaker, Jock, has all but given up hope of achieving his secret dream.
When a couple of gardening enthusiasts from one of the apartments suggest they all create a communal garden on their rooftop, no one is interested. Not at first, anyway. But as the residents come together over their budding plants and produce, their lives become interconnected in ways they could never have imagined.
From award-winning novelist Barbara Hannay, The Garden of Hopes and Dreams is a timely and uplifting story about the importance of community and the healing power of connection.

Light hearted fluff
I mostly enjoyed this listen, the narrator definitely brought the story to life but I felt the story itself was lacking. I listened to the whole book still and enjoyed parts but over all it didn't really grab me or hold my attention.

Supremely Sweet!
Not a book that I would usually pick to read, however I thoroughly enjoyed The Garden of Hopes and Dreams and as I have been a frequent visitor to Brisbane, I could easily picture where it was all taking place, and the people who lived in the apartment building are people that I feel I could well have known.
I quickly became invested in the characters and wanted to know more of the storyline and very much enjoyed it, to the very end.
I feel like this could well be turned into a series!!
Recommended.

A bit predictable!
I loved the idea of the rooftop garden but I found the story line rather predictable like a Mills and Boon! Also the DV guy disappears very conveniently and I am sure he would have given her more trouble!
I liked the insight into an older woman’s thinking and it gave me more empathy for my own mother!

Lovely local story
A lovely story for light reading. A little above the baseline cookie-cutter light romance. Loved the Aussie narrator! (Pity about the pronounciation of St Lucia!)
