The Greek poet, Hesiod, stands out as the first personality in European literature. The Theogony contains a genealogy of the gods from the beginning of time and an account of their violent struggles before the present order was established. The Works and Days, a compendium of advice for a life of honest husbandry, shines a unique and fascinating light on archaic Greek society, ethics, and superstition. Hesiod's poetry is the oldest source of the myths of Prometheus, Pandora, and the Golden Age.

Walking was first published in the June 1862 issue of Atlantic Monthly. In this treatise, Thoreau reminds us of how the primal act of walking connects us with nature. He argues that the genius of walking does not lie in mechanically putting one foot in front of the other toward to a destination, but in mastering the art of sauntering. The themes of Walking include freedom, self-reflection, and exploration. Thoreau states that the act of walking marks the human being as an inhabitant, or part and parcel of nature, rather than a member of society.

The poem "Song of Myself" by Walt Whitman first appeared in his 1855 volume Leaves of Grass. "Song of Myself" is written in Whitman’s signature free verse style. The "I" of the narrator should not be confused with the person of the historical Walt Whitman, as the first-person persona is portrayed as having transcended the conventional boundaries of self. Most critics consider "Song of Myself" as the core of Whitman’s poetic vision, and it remains one of the most acclaimed of all American poems.

Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali poet, visual artist, playwright, novelist, and composer. Three of his most prominent works are included here: Gitanjali is a cycle of 103 poems about the bliss of living and dying in wonder of the creation, while Stray Birds is a collection of some 300 poems. The poems are short but profound and the imagery lingers. The novel, The Home and the World is set on an estate in 1908; it’s a blend of love story and political intrigue against the background of the conflict in India.

William Henry Hudson (1841-1922) was an author, naturalist, and ornithologist. Born in Argentina, he spent his youth studying the local fauna and flora and observing the natural and human dramas on what was then a lawless frontier. Far Away and Long Ago is a record of the years 1840-50 on the Pampas. The abundant wildlife was easily observed and the author became a naturalist with a great talent for description. Hudson observed the birds, beasts and plants: the cowbird - the red willow, the armadillo, and the opossum - where adventurous Gauchos herded cattle.

Peer Gynt, the five-act romantic play in verse by the Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen, is one of the most widely performed Norwegian plays. Based on a Norwegian folk hero, the title character is a rogue who will be destroyed unless the love of a woman saves him. At a wedding he meets Solveig, who falls in love with him, but Peer ruins the wedding by abducting, then abandoning the bride. Then Peer goes global, misbehaving in a trail of adventures around the world. When he finally returns to Norway, old and embittered, Solveig welcomes him home, and he's redeemed by her love.

The Art of Worldly Wisdom was written in 1647. It is a collection of 300 maxims on various topics, each elaborated with a commentary. The sayings offer advice and guidance on how to live well, advance socially, and be a better person.

The Kalevala is a 19th-century work of epic poetry compiled by Elias Lönnrot from Karelian and Finnish oral folklore and mythology. The Kalevala was instrumental in the development of the Finnish national identity and the sense of nationality that led to Finland's independence from Russia in 1917. Beginning with the traditional Finnish creation myth, the Kalevala branches out into stories of the creation of the earth, plants, creatures, and the sky. There are many stories of, romance, kidnapping, seduction, and magical spell casting and singing.

D L Moody (1837-1899) was a prominent 19th century evangelist who founded the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago and Moody Publishers. Moody defines prevailing prayer as a form of prayer that involves the whole of one’s being and affects one’s mind, will and emotions. The author identifies and explains those factors that will increase the likelihood of prayers being answered, and described some of the stumbling blocks to all-consuming prayer.

Thomas Watson (c. 1620-1686) was an English Puritan preacher and author who served as vicar of St. Stephen's Walbrook. In The Ten Commandments he discusses the rule of obedience as the moral law, summarised in the 10 commandments. The Godly Man's Picture portrays the Biblical characteristics of a godly man, referring to verses from the Psalms or Song of Songs. All Things For Good is a rigorous exposition of Romans 8:28.

Martin Luther's Bondage of the Will (1525) is a response to Desiderius Erasmus's "Diatribe on Free Will.’ The work is considered as one of the great masterpieces of the Reformation. Luther writes powerfully about man's depravity and God's sovereignty in his direct style, which combines spirituality and humor. For Luther, the crucial issue was the ability of free will, and the extent to which it is subject to God's sovereignty.

The diary of Sarah Raymond chronicles the family’s journey from Missouri to Virginia City, Montana Territory. Sarah notes each day's adventures - the accidents, illness, Indian encounters, mud, dust, boredom, and fear. Her journal was first published in a newspaper in the 1880s, and the book appeared in 1902.

Francis Pretty was a diarist and sailor who wrote detailed accounts of his two separate circumnavigations of the globe. The first was with Sir Francis Drake (1577-1580) and the second with Thomas Cavendish (1588).

Clarence Larkin (1850-1924) was a pastor, author, and theologian. Published in 1918, The Book of Daniel examines the Biblical book of Daniel in detail. An entire chapter is devoted to the dream of King Nebuchadnezzar and Daniel’s interpretation of it. Larkin also investigates and interprets the Book of Revelation, with reference to earlier books of the Bible.

"The Emperor’s Three Questions" is a parable of an emperor who seeks out a holy man for answers to questions he believes will help him to be a great ruler. Knowing that wisdom needs to be experienced, the holy man cannot just tell the emperor. The answers that unfold in the narrative will be better remembered.

John Flavel (1627-1691) was an English Presbyterian clergyman, puritan, and popular author. Christ Altogether Lovely is a short meditation on the life and work of Jesus Christ. The text is introduced by a quote from The Song of Songs: "This is my beloved, and this is my friend." (Song of Songs 5:16). Flavel highlights Christ's offices as prophet, priest, and king, and his relations to Christians as savior, advocate, bridegroom, and friend.

St. Bernard of Clairvaux describe four loves: self-love, selfish love, loving God objectified, and loving one's self in God. These four loves are all on the path of learning to love God. He asserts that reaching the last stage of love grants a pain-free afterlife.

Sir Julian Stafford Corbett (1854-1922) was a prominent British naval historian and geostrategist whose works helped shape the Royal Navy's reforms of that era. Some Principles of Maritime Strategy (1918) is one of his most famous works. It covers the theory of war and the theory of naval war, and examines how England was able to prevent stronger navies from ever landing successfully or cutting supply routes between colonies in the empire. Corbett illustrates his insights with reference to the history of navies and naval battles.

On Horsemanship, also sometimes titled The Art of Horsemanship, is a treatise written about 350 BCE by the Athenian historian, soldier, and student of Socrates, Xenophon (c. 430-354 BC). The treatise is a "hands-on" manual which deals with the selection, care, and training of horses in general.

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837-1899) was an evangelist, author, and publisher associated with the Holiness Movement. In How to Study the Bible, he discusses the reasons why Bible study is so important for Christians. Recognizing the differences between individuals, he offers a variety of different methods for doing so. There are sections on observation, interpretation and application of the texts and the author also offers the tools for understanding the difficult passages in the scriptures.
