Edward McKendree Bounds (1835-1913) was an author, attorney, and Methodist pastor. In The Weapon of Prayer, Bounds explains the necessity and the realities of prayer. In Power Through Prayer Bounds stresses the imperative of vital prayer in the life of a pastor. The Essentials of Prayer is a classic on prayer written for the layman in which Bounds discusses the parts of prayer.

This 1754 work by Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is subtitled An Inquiry into the Modern Prevailing Notions of the Freedom of the Will Which Is Supposed to Be Essential to Moral Agency, Virtue and Vice, Reward and Punishment, Praise and Blame. Edwards was a Christian reformer, theologian, and author in the Calvinist tradition, and in this work he explores the necessity of divine grace for the redeeming of the damaged will of humanity. He contends that free will is an extension of, and connected to, the grace of God.

Charles Grandison Finney (1792-1875) was a Presbyterian minister and a leader of the Second Great Awakening in the United States. He has been called “The Father of Modern Revivalism”. These powerful lectures deal with religious revival, how to encourage or promote it, and explaining how a revival experience may be maintained in the life of the Christian and in the life of the church. The author considered a religious revival as a new beginning of obedience to God.

Frederick Brotherton Meyer (1847-1929) was a Baptist pastor and evangelist in England involved in ministry and inner city mission work on both sides of the Atlantic. He was a friend of D. L. Moody and A. C. Dixon, and the author of numerous religious books and articles. Referring constantly to scripture in "The Secret of Guidance", Meyer calls on believers to examine their inner motives, to consider how they ought to be receptive to God’s guidance. Nelson ran away from home as a young teenager to adventure in the west. After meeting a band of Sioux, he got himself adopted into the tribe, learned how to live off the land and became a Sioux warrior.

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837-1899) was an evangelist, author, and publisher associated with the Holiness Movement. Charles Finney (1792-1875) was a Presbyterian preacher known for his revival services and extemporaneous preaching. He also dealt with social issues and was an abolitionist. In 1835, Finney was appointed as a professor of theology at Oberlin College; he became its president in 1851. Sermons on Gospel Themes is a collection of his sermons, including 24 delivered at Oberlin College between 1844 and 1861. They were taken down in shorthand while Finney preached them, and submitted to him for correction or addition.

Alfred Edersheim (1825-1889) was a biblical scholar who converted from Judaism to Christianity and wrote popular books like The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, The Temple: Its Ministry and Services, and Bible History Old Testament. In this extensive work, Edersheim examines the Messianic prophecies in the Jewish scripture from the Christian perspective. Through the 12 chapters of the book, he argues that Jesus Christ fulfilled the Messianic hopes of many of the Old Testament prophecies.

John Owen (1616 - 1683) was vice chancellor of Oxford University and served as advisor to Oliver Cromwell. The Death of Death in the Death of Christ is a polemical work, attempting to prove, among other things, that the doctrine of universal redemption is unscriptural. It is divided into four parts. The first sets forth his thesis that the work of Christ on the cross was made for the full and complete salvation of those whom God intended to save.
