• Evolution of exercise with Master Trainer Andrew Jackson
    Dec 23 2021

    Hello Twisted Wisdom Faithful!

It’s been far too long and we are excited to upload another episode, just in time as you travel “Over the river and through the woods.”🛷 🎄

And perhaps once you get there you’ll find some exercise equipment under the tree.  Dumbbells, kettle bells, jingle bells, oh my! Purchased with best intentions.  Received with enthusiasm or scorn. These are the tools of New Year’s resolutions….whether they actually work or not isn’t so clear.

You’ll really enjoy our conversation with Mr. Andrew Jackson, a wonderful friend and owner of Master Trainer Fit Pros here in Richmond, Virginia.  Drew has been in the game long enough to see lots of exercise trends come and go, and he certainly knows what works.

On the other hand, we at Twisted Wisdom irreverently make him revisit some of the most ridiculous things we’ve seen, some that we actually purchased, truth be told.

Over some good bourbon we share stories of people, places, and perseverance. As we revisit fitness trends we’ll try to leave you looking forward to good health, happiness, and great plans for the new year.

Happy Holidays from Twisted Wisdom! Next episode delivered the first week of 2022!

  • Twisted Wisdom Live at Kindred Spirit
    Nov 1 2021

Happy Halloween Twisted Wisdom listeners! Zach and I realized that we have recently “ghosted you” but we promise it was for significant reasons. Our amazing engineer Matthew has been on the road with an artist named Julien Baker and he is currently on the West Coast leg of that tour. Our wonderful intern Adia has returned to her academic obligations at VCU.

It may surprise you but we still have plenty in the bank. Tonight we will publish our first live episode recorded at Kindred Spirit Brewery here in Richmond, Virginia on August 19, 2021. It was really a good time with some great friends. We can’t wait to do it again soon!  Over the next few weeks we will cover exercise and weight loss evolution, capping it off with a super interview with sports cardiologist Dr. Paul Thompson.

Stay tuned and don’t let the bogeyman get you tonight!

In this third and final chapter of our series “Should you teach your kids to fight?” we look at the schools’ perspective. Many altercations, physical and virtual, begin and end at school. What do school administrators see and how do they respond?  As these issues become more and more complex, what are the tools implicated by a school system?

In our first two chapters we spent significant time discussing what we actually hope no one needs: self defense.  In the end it’s all about situational awareness.  The fight is to make yourself and your loved ones prepared and then to ensure it’s never required.

Bullies and abusers are not isolated to the playground. It is a fact that threats - and opportunities - orbit around us at all times.

In this episode we enlist the help of Mark Winn, owner and chief instructor of Winning Warrior Krav Maga here in Richmond and the author of the recently published book “Not a Victim but a Warrior.“ Mark will make  a very informed case that a philosophy of strike first, strike hard might be the best single thing you can do to end a problem and return home safely to your family.

Get ready for what’s coming your way in this episode of Twisted Wisdom!

  • Teach your kids to fight
    Sep 7 2021

The advent of another school year.   While the pandemic throws its own sucker punch at us, kids still have more traditional bullies to contend with.  Whether face-to-face or cyberspace, the anxiety and the damage is real.

Many of us can recall a personal struggle with this kind of confrontation. While we persevered, scars remain.  Of course, our parents would do anything to help us, but it’s not that easy.  Their advice was well-intended but likely poorly informed.

Let’s start a dialogue before something happens. Listen to our experts and let’s collaborate as parents.  I think we can give our kids a better strategy this time.

  • The Disruptor, Pt. II
    Aug 24 2021

Aaron Montgomery and his partners disrupted the century-old used car sales business when they created CarLotz, the nation’s largest consignment to retail used car marketplace,  right here in Richmond, VA.

Aaron’s  upbringing as the only child of a single mom in Detroit, Michigan prepared him for this and much more.   In fact, CarLotz is just one of many momentous chapters in Aaron’s story, each one built squarely on the last.  He is an adept curator of all his experiences big and small, and the man himself will likely be the moral of his own story.*

We are absolutely certain you will enjoy this conversation, naturally divided into two sections to encompass the breadth of the interview.  Aaron Montgomery is at once delightful, insightful, humorous, and inspiring.  By the end I’m sure you will see why we couldn’t help but dub him “The Disruptor.”

  • “Brotox”
    Jul 12 2021

Are you afraid to look better?  Many of you hit the gym regularly, buy high quality tailored apparel, oil your beards, and even manscape (yes there will be an episode on that too!).

Yet most of you surrender the amazing advancements in plastic surgery and cosmetic medicine almost entirely to the women in your lives.  Why?

We are finally starting to see that pattern change accelerated by none other than the pandemic itself.

In this episode called “Brotox” we enlist the expertise of Dr. Greg Lynam, board-certified plastic surgeon and owner of Richmond Surgical Arts. Dr. Lynam details the impressive list of effective interventions that are available to help you look your best.

Life is tough but you don’t need to walk around looking the part!
