• 4 Years of Podcast Adventures : From Petal, MS to Paris
    Jun 30 2025

Sometimes the biggest dreams begin in the smallest rooms. Not because the room is grand or the lighting is perfect, but because the vision inside the person is too powerful to stay quiet. Indeed, it's not the size of the space that matters, it's what you dare to believe inside it.

The truth is, most dreams don’t start with applause. They start in isolation. They start when you feel unseen, unproven, and unsure if anyone will care. But it’s in those very moments that character is shaped. When no one is watching, you learn to stay consistent. When there's no audience, you discover if you’re doing it for approval or purpose.

Greatness rarely shows up looking like a spotlight. It often looks like discipline when you’re tired. Courage when you’re doubting. Obedience when the outcome is unclear.

If you’re in a small room wondering if it matters, hold on. This could be the foundation for something greater. So keep showing up not for applause, but because the vision in you won’t stay quiet.

In this anniversary episode of Time Out with the SportsDr, I’m sharing what it’s taken to get here, the setbacks, the growth, the faith, and the community that made it all possible. Four years ago, this podcast started in a quiet basement. Today, I’m standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, filled with gratitude for every step of this journey. This isn't just a celebration, but a reminder that small beginnings can lead to unimaginable impact.

“Words are powerful, and if you’re not telling yourself what you can do, you can’t expect the world to have your back.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess

  • Athlete Forever - The Lifecycle of the Athlete with Dr. William Hill
    Jun 16 2025
Life doesn’t always go as planned. For some, the path is clear. For others, it takes unexpected turns. That was true for one former athlete whose dream of going pro ended with a heart condition. But instead of giving up, he pivoted—with purpose. He moved from the field to farming, and later, to medicine. It wasn’t easy. The path didn’t make sense on paper, but someone believed in him. Now, he’s creating something bigger: The Youth Sports Awards. More than just trophies, it’s a national stage to honor young athletes as leaders, students, and changemakers. It’s about recognizing not just performance, but potential. It invites doctors, parents, icons, and supporters to pour into the next generation on and off the field. This isn’t just an event. It’s a movement. A reminder that success isn’t always about staying on the same path—it’s about knowing when to pivot. Dr. William Hill is a doctor and former college athlete who helps young people succeed through sports and education. He founded Athlete Forever and the Youth Sports Awards to support and celebrate young athletes. He cares deeply about helping young athletes grow both on and off the field, teaching them skills like money management and wellness. In this episode with Dr. William Hill, we explore his inspiring journey of overcoming sudden setbacks, transitioning from athlete to surgeon, and the passion behind creating the Youth Sports Awards—a platform that celebrates young athletes’ achievements both on and off the field. Tune in for inspiration on chasing your purpose and supporting the next generation of athletes. “You have to go after what your mission, vision and purpose is. • How to Build Strong Credit and Avoid Common Money Traps with Dr. Zwade Marshall
    Jun 2 2025
Becoming a doctor takes years of hard work, long nights, and little rest. We learn how to care for others but no one really teaches us how to care for ourselves. Once the white coat is on, the outside world begins to matter more, our time, our peace, our money. Many doctors stay quiet about the weight they carry, especially when it comes to money. We are trained to heal people, not to handle debt or grow wealth. But learning those things matters just as much. Without that knowledge, even a great career can lead to stress and burnout. It is time to start talking about money, real estate, freedom, and building a future we can be proud of. These are not selfish goals. They are smart. They are necessary. Being a doctor should not mean losing yourself. It should mean creating a life that works for you, not just for your patients. True success is not only found inside the hospital. It is also found in the life you build beyond it. Dr. Zwade Marshall is an Emory and Harvard-trained, double board-certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain management specialist. He serves as Chief Medical Officer of Regenerative Spine and Pain Specialists. With a background in Economics from Emory and clinical training from Harvard, Dr. Marshall co-founded Doc2Doc Lending to create physician-focused financial solutions after recognizing how traditional banks often misjudge the risk profile of early-career doctors. In this episode of Time Out with the Sports Doctor, I’m joined by Dr. Zwade Marshall for another round of Money Mondays. We’re breaking down student loans, how to borrow smart, manage repayment, and avoid common mistakes. Tune in as we share practical tips and real talk to help you take control of your financial future. "Just because you have the loan money doesn't mean you have to spend it all." – Dr. Zwade Marshall Topics Covered: (00:00:00) Welcome to TimeOut with the SportsDr Podcast (00:00:53) Introducing our guest, Dr. Zwade Marshall (00:02:23) The financial literacy gap (00:04:04) Stewardship over student loans (00:05:23) Borrow only what you need (00:08:36) Is debt always bad? "Debt is not necessarily bad, depending on how you're using it." "Very important to automate your life, especially during residency and med school, where your primary focus is studying and taking care of patients and survival." • Meeting the Standard with Dr. Derrick Burgess
    May 5 2025

In a world full of copy-and-paste success stories, it's easy to believe that hard work alone is enough to make you stand out. But the truth is, doing your best doesn't always mean you're meeting the standard and meeting the standard doesn't mean you're the best.

Many people are comfortable with working harder or improving their skills, but the real challenge lies in being different. Being different means stepping outside of what’s normal, expected, or accepted. That’s uncomfortable.

You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t need to rush. But if your goal is to be the best, then just meeting the standard is not enough. You have to push past it. You have to study what the best are doing, learn from them, and then take it a step further in your own way.

What makes you different might just be what makes you great. Be different. Be great.

In this episode, I reflect on a powerful experience I had at the Momentum Conference with Dr. Eric Thomas. I will share the key takeaways from his speech, focusing on the importance of setting a high standard for yourself, being relentless in pursuing your goals, and the mindset shift required to achieve success. Tune in to hear how you can apply these lessons to elevate your game!

"In order to become the best, you're going to have to do more, be better, and be different."– Dr. Derrick Burgess

    Key Takeaways:

“So many of us are very driven. We've already achieved what the world might deem success, but we're still hungry and searching for more."

"It's hard to win the game if you don't know exactly what game you're playing."

"When you don't know the rules, it's hard to become successful in that field. Being able to understand and really identify the standard is important."

"Be careful who you surround yourself with—comparing yourself to others, especially if you're already doing better, can stop you from working hard to truly be your best."

  • Breaking Financial Barriers for Doctors with Dr. Zwade Marshall
    Apr 21 2025
The journey through medical school and residency is tough, and it often feels like there’s no time for anything else. But once the white coat is on, life outside of medicine starts to matter more. The pandemic forced many to rethink everything, showing that being a doctor isn’t just about treating patients—it’s also about handling personal finances, making smart investments, and taking control of your future. Financial literacy, something many of us didn’t learn early on, became a real game-changer. Talking about money, real estate, and managing debt should happen sooner, not later. The truth is, many doctors face financial struggles in silence. Acknowledging this is the first step to changing that. It’s time to open up the conversation about money in medicine, learn about finances, and empower the next generation to succeed in both their careers and personal lives. Success is more than just the work inside the white coat—it’s about building a life outside of it too. In this episode with Dr. Zwade Marshall of Doc2Doc Lending, we talk about the financial realities physicians face—from student loan debt and low early-career incomes to the challenges of building credit. We explore the importance of financial literacy and how destigmatizing debt can empower physicians to build wealth, stability, and peace of mind. • Back in the Game: The Road to ACL Recovery with Jency Riley Jr.
    Apr 7 2025
In the world of professional sports, athletes face the constant fear of injury. While the physical impact is clear—strains, tears, and breaks—the mental and emotional effects can be just as severe. The fear of never returning to peak performance can cloud an athlete's confidence and mental health, making recovery a long, challenging process. Injury not only disrupts an athlete’s career but also challenges their identity. The road to recovery requires physical healing and emotional resilience, as athletes wrestle with frustration and self-doubt. However, many emerge stronger, learning to push through both physical and mental barriers. Overcoming the fear of injury means accepting it as part of the journey. By confronting and working through this fear, athletes can return to their sport more prepared, confident, and focused on what lies ahead. Jency Riley Jr. is a student-athlete and passionate storyteller majoring in Sports Media and Journalism. With a strong background in sports and a deep love for media, he is dedicated to blending his athletic experience with his skills in journalism to offer fresh perspectives on the sports world. As an active podcast host, Jency dives into game analysis, athlete stories, and interviews with those shaping the sports landscape. He aims to engage audiences through new media platforms, creating content that entertains, informs, and inspires. In this episode, I’m excited to share a conversation I had with Jency Riley Jr, a tight end at Jackson State University, on his YouTube channel. We talked about ACL injuries, recovery, and the challenges athletes face—not just physically, but mentally too. As an orthopedic surgeon with over 13 years of experience, I dive into what athletes go through, from surgery to the emotional ups and downs of returning to play. This episode is a must-listen for athletes, parents, coaches, and anyone looking to better understand the journey of injury recovery. "It doesn’t matter how well I do your surgery. If you don’t do your part, you’re gonna remain weak and you’re not gonna be able to protect your knee when you go back to play." – Dr. Derrick Burgess Topics Covered: (00:00:00) Welcome to TimeOut with the SportsDr Podcast (00:02:31) Jency Riley’s knee surgery (00:04:11) Meet Dr. Derrick Burgess (00:06:06) Small world moments (00:07:25) Starting the podcast to inspire others (00:09:57) How knee injuries are diagnosed (00:12:55) Understanding the rehab process before surgery (00:15:53) A blessing in disguise (00:18:53) Importance of support for injured athletes (00:19:12) The first painful week of recovery (00:21:02) Importance of rehab for full recovery (00:22:34) The fear of re-injury is real (00:24:38) Run your own race (00:26:17) Strengthening your quad (00:29:37) Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess (00:31:24) Wrap-up Key Takeaways: "It’s unfortunate when you get injured, but it’s fortunate for me because that’s the people that I really get to know." Life challenges us in ways we never anticipate—through illness, loss, or unforeseen hardships. These moments demand resilience and force us to confront the need for recovery—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually.

Sometimes, we aren’t given a choice. A diagnosis, an injury, or an emotional collapse compels us to pause and reevaluate what truly matters. These moments bring unexpected clarity, reminding us of the value of relationships, the power of presence, and the significance of life’s simple joys. In facing our fragility, we learn to live with intention.

Strength isn’t the absence of struggle but the wisdom to rest, seek help, and realign priorities. While we can’t control everything, we can choose our response—and in that choice, we shape our healing.

In this episode of Time Out with the Sports Doctor, we explore what it takes to win—both in sports and in life. Our experts share insights on mindset, resilience, and mental health, offering strategies to help athletes perform at their best, recover effectively, and stay motivated. Tune in as we break down the keys to success, from mental toughness to recovery strategies, helping athletes stay at the top of their game.
