Sometimes the biggest dreams begin in the smallest rooms. Not because the room is grand or the lighting is perfect, but because the vision inside the person is too powerful to stay quiet. Indeed, it's not the size of the space that matters, it's what you dare to believe inside it.

The truth is, most dreams don’t start with applause. They start in isolation. They start when you feel unseen, unproven, and unsure if anyone will care. But it’s in those very moments that character is shaped. When no one is watching, you learn to stay consistent. When there's no audience, you discover if you’re doing it for approval or purpose.

Greatness rarely shows up looking like a spotlight. It often looks like discipline when you’re tired. Courage when you’re doubting. Obedience when the outcome is unclear.

If you’re in a small room wondering if it matters, hold on. This could be the foundation for something greater. So keep showing up not for applause, but because the vision in you won’t stay quiet.

In this anniversary episode of Time Out with the SportsDr, I’m sharing what it’s taken to get here, the setbacks, the growth, the faith, and the community that made it all possible. Four years ago, this podcast started in a quiet basement. Today, I’m standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, filled with gratitude for every step of this journey. This isn't just a celebration, but a reminder that small beginnings can lead to unimaginable impact.

“Words are powerful, and if you’re not telling yourself what you can do, you can’t expect the world to have your back.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess

  • Athlete Forever - The Lifecycle of the Athlete with Dr. William Hill
    Jun 16 2025
Life doesn’t always go as planned. For some, the path is clear. For others, it takes unexpected turns. That was true for one former athlete whose dream of going pro ended with a heart condition. But instead of giving up, he pivoted—with purpose. He moved from the field to farming, and later, to medicine. It wasn’t easy. The path didn’t make sense on paper, but someone believed in him. Now, he’s creating something bigger: The Youth Sports Awards. More than just trophies, it’s a national stage to honor young athletes as leaders, students, and changemakers. It’s about recognizing not just performance, but potential. It invites doctors, parents, icons, and supporters to pour into the next generation on and off the field. This isn’t just an event. It’s a movement. A reminder that success isn’t always about staying on the same path—it’s about knowing when to pivot. Dr. William Hill is a doctor and former college athlete who helps young people succeed through sports and education. He founded Athlete Forever and the Youth Sports Awards to support and celebrate young athletes. He cares deeply about helping young athletes grow both on and off the field, teaching them skills like money management and wellness. In this episode with Dr. William Hill, we explore his inspiring journey of overcoming sudden setbacks, transitioning from athlete to surgeon, and the passion behind creating the Youth Sports Awards—a platform that celebrates young athletes’ achievements both on and off the field. Tune in for inspiration on chasing your purpose and supporting the next generation of athletes. “You have to go after what your mission, vision and purpose is. And if that’s something that others can’t see, you still have to do it.” – Dr. William Hill Topics Covered: (00:00:00) Welcome to TimeOut with the SportsDr Podcast (00:00:27) Next Level Speaker Clip (00:02:57) Introducing our guest, Dr. William Hill (00:03:35) What is a Sports Medicine Fellowship? Your mission, your vision and your purpose. Don’t let yourself down.” – Dr. William Hill "I was thinking how I could make the most impact for the most people—and that's where Athlete Forever came from, developing an app that could support the athlete from the recruit phase all the way through retirement, even into their 60s, 70s, and 80s." – Dr. William Hill Connect with Dr. William Hill: Website: https://www.youthsportsawards.net Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/weareathletesforever/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7313098095280406528/ Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess: Website: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drderrickthesportsdr/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeOut.SportsDr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrick-burgess-72047b246/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@dr.derrickburgess243 Email: thesportsdoctr@gmail.com This episode of TimeOut with the SportsDr. is produced by Podcast VAs Philippines - the team that helps podcasters effectively launch and manage their podcasts, so we don't have to. • How to Build Strong Credit and Avoid Common Money Traps with Dr. Zwade Marshall
    Jun 2 2025
Becoming a doctor takes years of hard work, long nights, and little rest. We learn how to care for others but no one really teaches us how to care for ourselves. Once the white coat is on, the outside world begins to matter more, our time, our peace, our money. Many doctors stay quiet about the weight they carry, especially when it comes to money. We are trained to heal people, not to handle debt or grow wealth. But learning those things matters just as much. Without that knowledge, even a great career can lead to stress and burnout. It is time to start talking about money, real estate, freedom, and building a future we can be proud of. These are not selfish goals. They are smart. They are necessary. Being a doctor should not mean losing yourself. It should mean creating a life that works for you, not just for your patients. True success is not only found inside the hospital. It is also found in the life you build beyond it. Dr. Zwade Marshall is an Emory and Harvard-trained, double board-certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain management specialist. He serves as Chief Medical Officer of Regenerative Spine and Pain Specialists. With a background in Economics from Emory and clinical training from Harvard, Dr. Marshall co-founded Doc2Doc Lending to create physician-focused financial solutions after recognizing how traditional banks often misjudge the risk profile of early-career doctors. In this episode of Time Out with the Sports Doctor, I’m joined by Dr. Zwade Marshall for another round of Money Mondays. We’re breaking down student loans, how to borrow smart, manage repayment, and avoid common mistakes. Tune in as we share practical tips and real talk to help you take control of your financial future. "Just because you have the loan money doesn't mean you have to spend it all." – Dr. Zwade Marshall Topics Covered: (00:00:00) Welcome to TimeOut with the SportsDr Podcast (00:00:53) Introducing our guest, Dr. Zwade Marshall (00:02:23) The financial literacy gap (00:04:04) Stewardship over student loans (00:05:23) Borrow only what you need (00:08:36) Is debt always bad? (00:24:17) The importance of finding a bank that believes in you (00:26:07) Why Doc2Doc is different (00:29:44) How to access Doc2Doc Lending Key Takeaways: "There's not enough financial literacy out there for doctors. It's not a part of the medical school curriculum, resident curriculum, and of your fellowship curriculum." "Don't borrow more than you need. Borrow only what you need at that moment in time." "Debt is not necessarily bad, depending on how you're using it." "Very important to automate your life, especially during residency and med school, where your primary focus is studying and taking care of patients and survival." "Retirement planning should start as early as possible so that medicine is something you do voluntarily, not because you have to earn a check." Connect with Dr. Zwade J.
