  • 10. Chicken Nugget Night
    Apr 24 2025

In this week’s episode of Parenting Lab, I'm walking down memory lane to when my kids were just 5 and 8. It was a time when life felt like a constant juggling act. It was exhausting, overwhelming, and honestly, I questioned if I was doing any of it right.

But in the middle of that chaos, something beautiful and totally unplanned happened: Chicken Nugget Night. What started as a last-minute attempt to keep the kids happy while I crammed to meet college deadlines turned into a weekly tradition that lasted for years—and became one of my kids’ fondest childhood memories.

At the time, I felt like the worst mom—stressed, tired, glued to my laptop, and not “present” in the way I wanted to be. But years later, when my kids talked about those nights, all they remembered was the fun, the comfort, and the love. They didn’t remember me being distracted. They remembered that we were together.

Here's what I hope you'll take away this week:

    1. It’s okay to be in a season where you can’t do it all.Maybe you’re working, studying, co-parenting, healing, or just trying to stay afloat. It’s okay if you’re not showing up perfectly—what matters is that you show up.

    2. Your kids don’t need big gestures—they need your presence.Even when you feel like you’re not doing enough, your love and effort are more than enough. The little things are the big things.

    3. Guilt is a heavy load to carry—but your kids likely remember things differently.Where I saw failure, my kids saw magic. And that realization helped me heal a part of myself that had carried doubt for so long.

    4. You can create connection in the middle of chaos.
Chicken Nugget Night wasn’t fancy or planned—it was just a small moment of intention in a busy life. That’s what made it special.

    • I hope this little window into our family can inspire you to find new ways to connect with your kids - even simple ones!

  • 8. "What's My Job?" - The Question that Changes EVERYTHING!
    Apr 10 2025

In this insightful episode, we explore one simple yet powerful question that can transform your parenting approach: What’s my job? The answer I offer is this - to keep my kids safe. From this foundational belief, an entire parenting philosophy unfolds — one rooted in trust, mutual respect, and family values.

This episode outlines how redefining your “job” as a parent can help build a home where safety — physical, emotional, psychological, and social — is the cornerstone.

    Key Takeaways:

🛡️ Safety as a Core Value: Learn why prioritizing safety over control builds stronger relationships and more respectful communication with your kids.

    🧠 Four Pillars of Safety:

    • Physical Safety: More than just avoiding danger — it’s about being a safe harbor while encouraging confident exploration.
    • Emotional Safety: How calm, present parenting helps your child feel seen, heard, and valued.
    • Psychological Safety: Creating space for independent thought, curiosity, and learning through mistakes without fear.
    • Social Safety: Guiding kids through friendships, boundaries, and the online world with openness and accountability.

📱 Real Talk About Boundaries: Why a few clear, consistent rules can be more effective than a laundry list of do’s and don’ts.

💬 The Power of Trust: How framing conversations around safety instead of control helps kids “buy in” to your guidance — even when they disagree.

⛵ Safe Harbor Analogy: A beautiful metaphor to help parents navigate their role as a steady, loving presence in a chaotic world.

Whether you’re raising toddlers, teens, or young adults, this episode offers a grounding and empowering perspective on parenting with purpose. Share it with the parents in your life who are ready to parent from a place of connection, not fear.

  • 6. Patience vs. Persistence
    Mar 27 2025

Have you ever felt like you needed to be a more patient parent?

In this episode of The Parenting Lab, we’re diving into a simple but powerful mindset shift: moving from patience to persistence. Instead of just "being patient" with our kids, which can sometimes feel passive, we talk about how persistence lets us actively engage in our kids’ growth and behavior. Persistence is all about charting an intentional course, connecting firmly to our values, staying consistent, and responding thoughtfully—especially when things get tough.

    Key takeaways:

    1. Parenting isn’t about passively waiting for things to improve; it’s about actively guiding our kids through challenges.

    2. Persistence helps us stay grounded in our values, even when things don’t go as planned.

    3. Setbacks aren’t roadblocks—they’re opportunities to grow and strengthen our resolve.

  • 5. (Un)Conditional Love
    Mar 20 2025

This week, we dive into the concept of unconditional love in parenting and how it contrasts with conditional love—love that’s based on a child’s behavior or performance. We talk about how conditional love can show up in everyday interactions and how it can affect children’s emotional health. If you grew up with love that felt like something you had to earn, this episode is especially for you. I’ll share how you can break free from those old patterns and start offering your kids the gift of unconditional love, even if you didn’t experience it yourself. We also touch on practical steps to help create a more emotionally supportive and loving environment at home.

    Key Takeaways for Parents:

    1. Recognizing Conditional Love: It’s important to recognize when you might be offering conditional love, where affection and approval are tied to your child’s behavior or achievements. Awareness of this is the first step in shifting toward a more unconditional approach.

    2. The Impact on Kids: When children sense they have to “earn” love, it can lead to anxiety, low self-esteem, and a tendency to people-please. Understanding these effects can help parents create a healthier emotional environment for their kids to thrive in.

    3. Healing and Practicing Unconditional Love: Even if you didn’t receive unconditional love growing up, it’s possible to offer it to your children. It requires self-awareness, empathy, and a willingness to break old patterns. Unconditional love means loving your child no matter what, which helps build trust and emotional security in your relationship.

This episode provides helpful insights for parents who want to build stronger, healthier relationships with their kids by offering steady, unwavering love—regardless of behavior or performance.
