There is a need to develop a framework that enhances the management capabilities of professional bodies in South Africa, addressing the need for improved support and professional development for members, as well as collaboration with industry and regulatory bodies like SAQA. A research study identified eleven significant factors in this regard, including member and industry support, CPD support, assurance mechanisms, and standards setting, which are crucial for the operational efficiency and effectiveness of professional bodies. The framework created from these factors serves as a guide for professional bodies to improve their practices and engagement with members, promoting better service delivery and member involvement. The study emphasizes the importance of regular communication, benchmarking, and the need for professional bodies to adapt to the evolving demands of their members and the industry, ultimately contributing to the overall productivity and credibility of these organizations

The Policy and Criteria for Recognising a Professional Body and Registering a Professional Designation, developed by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) under the National Qualifications Framework Act, outlines the processes and criteria for the recognition of professional bodies and the registration of their designations. It aims to ensure that these entities operate in a manner that promotes accountability, social responsiveness, and public trust within various professions. Recognised professional bodies must adhere to good governance practices, have adequate resources, and implement policies that promote transformation and inclusivity. They are responsible for developing and managing their designations, which require compliance with established standards, including Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
