• Can PTU Cause Permanent Liver Damage?
    Jun 6 2024

Compared to other anti-thyroid medications such as methimazole, propylthiouracil (PTU) is not commonly prescribed by endocrinologists. It’s generally only prescribed in specific cases where the methimazole is contraindicated or not well tolerated.

It's not uncommon for PTU to cause elevated liver enzymes, and in rare cases, that can lead to liver damage. Thankfully, this is not something I’ve experienced in my practice, as it’s a rare side effect. Today, I’m sharing what the research shows about PTU's potential negative impact on the liver.

In this episode, you’ll learn about:
    - PTU’s mechanism of action
    - The most common scenarios where PTU is given
    - Case studies on the potential connection between taking PTU and liver damage
    - Recommendations for PTU use and monitoring of liver markers
    - How PTU can interfere with vitamin K activity

As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode!

  • Metabolism-Boosting Spices with Nagina Abdullah
    Jun 4 2024

“Losing weight can be fun. When I lost 40 pounds, it was the most exciting moment of my life because I was loving what I was eating every day and seeing my waist shrink.” - Nagina Abdullah

Many people associate diets and healthy food with restriction, deprivation, and boredom. Luckily, that doesn’t have to be the case. What we eat should be about more than just nutrition. Food can bring excitement, fun, and pleasure, and there’s no reason why that can’t be the case with healthy dishes.

For today’s guest, Nagina Abdullah, this realization was pivotal in her weight loss journey. Nagina Abdullah is a weight-loss coach for women in midlife and founder of the website MasalaBody.com. She teaches women to boost their metabolism by adding and combining metabolism-boosting foods to reduce belly fat and overall weight gain in midlife. Nagina has a degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley and has helped over 1,500 midlife women successfully lose weight and create a lifestyle change.

In this conversation, Nagina and I discuss how adding metabolism-boosting foods and spices helped her lose 40 pounds, the importance of incorporating adequate protein and vegetables into the diet, the benefits of spices like cinnamon, turmeric, and cayenne pepper, intermittent fasting, the need for personalized dietary choices, and more. Enjoy the episode!

  • Can thyroid imbalances affect oral health?
    May 30 2024

Oral health has been shown to play a significant role in overall health and thyroid health. Thyroid conditions have also been shown to impact oral health, and in my experience working with people with thyroid and autoimmune thyroid conditions, I’ve seen an increase in dental cavities, especially among patients with hyperthyroidism.

Today, I’m sharing what research shows about how thyroid conditions affect oral health. In this episode, you’ll learn about:

    - What I’ve seen in my practice when it comes to oral health and hyperthyroidism
    - Why it’s essential to work with a dentist familiar with the thyroid and an endocrinologist familiar with oral manifestations of thyroid disorders
    - Common oral manifestations of thyroid disorders
    - Dental management of hypo- and hyperthyroidism
    - How thyroid dysfunction can impact oral health status
    - The association between cavities and autoimmune thyroid disease

Thyroid health has a complex relationship with blood pressure. Despite common misconceptions, blood pressure issues can arise in both those with hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. The good news is that by working on the underlying root causes of thyroid conditions and strengthening the foundation of your health, you will often also see improvements in blood pressure.

Today, I’m excited to be joined by Dr. Ellie Campbell to take a deep dive into all things blood pressure. Dr. Campbell is a native Chicagoan and a graduate of the University of Illinois, the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Medical College of Georgia. • Why do my thyroid hormones increase even though my TSI is decreasing?
    May 23 2024

Often, we’ll see an increase in thyroid hormones in those with Graves’ disease. This is due to thyroid stimulating immunoglobulins (TSI), a type of TSH receptor antibody that binds to the TSH receptors and causes the thyroid gland to release an excessive amount of thyroid hormone.

For some people on the healing journey, TSI and thyroid hormone levels decrease simultaneously. However, this isn’t always the case. Today, I’m sharing why you might find thyroid hormone levels increasing despite decreasing TSI.

In this episode, you’ll learn about:
    - Causes of increased thyroid hormone levels in those with Graves' disease
    - The relationship between TSI and thyroid hormone production
    - What it can mean when thyroid hormone decreases while TSI increases
    - Why it’s crucial to find and treat the underlying causes
    - How elevated TSI levels can trigger a more vigorous immune response
    - Lab reference ranges for TSI
    - When to be concerned about fluctuations in thyroid hormones and TSI
    - How often to test TSI and thyroid hormone levels

“Lifestyle should be the first line before you consider anything else.” - Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum

With less than 7% of adult Americans considered to be metabolically healthy, people are suffering like never before. Chronic diseases and neurodegenerative conditions are on the rise, and mental health is on the decline. At the same time, there’s a significant shortage of providers equipped to help with these conditions.

The good news is that this is where health coaches can step in and make a massive difference. Today, I’m excited to be joined by Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum, who trains people to become Functional Medicine health coaches and helps practitioners and businesses hire them. Dr. Sandi believes health coaches are vital to combating chronic disease and reducing healthcare costs. As founder and CEO of the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, a collaboration with The Institute for Functional Medicine, Dr. Sandi is a leader in the field of health coaching education.

  • What is thyroid binding globulin?
    May 16 2024

When hormones are not in their free form, they travel through the bloodstream while bound to a protein.

Thyroid binding globulin (TBG) is one such protein. It binds to the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Essentially, TBG ensures that these hormones reach their intended destination.

Today, I’m sharing the role of TBG, the various factors that can influence its levels, methods for measuring these binding proteins, and strategies to help you bring your TBG levels back to normal.

In this episode, you’ll learn about:
    - The role of thyroid binding globulin in the body
    - Factors that increase and decrease thyroid binding globulin levels
    - How and when to measure thyroid binding globulin
    - What you can do to normalize thyroid binding globulin levels

  • What You Need to Know About Peptides and Thyroid Health with Dr. Jen Pfleghaar
    May 14 2024

“Peptides have helped a lot of patients who were feeling stuck to get to that extra 10% of wellness.” - Dr. Jen Pfleghaar

Peptides are chains of around four to fifty amino acids that work with your body, turning on and off genes. Our bodies naturally produce several peptides, like insulin and oxytocin, and because of how they work, they are mostly considered to be quite safe. Lately, peptides have become popular within the biohacking community because of their wide range of applications and relative safety compared to conventional medications.

Today I’m excited to be joined by Dr. Jen Pfleghaar to talk about the benefits of peptides and how they can benefit those with thyroid and autoimmune conditions. Dr. Jen Pfleghaar is a double board-certified physician in Integrative Medicine and Emergency Medicine. She is very passionate about helping patients with chronic disease and teaching them to let the body heal itself.

In this conversation, Dr. Jen and I discuss the role of peptides in thyroid health, benefits for autoimmune conditions, the use of specific peptides for managing inflammation and supporting patients with mold exposure and stealth infections, how peptides can be a part of your stress management strategy, the importance of high-quality sourcing for peptides, broader implications for health and longevity, and more.
