    A client of mine went home for a family reunion and was relentlessly picked on for becoming a coach.

    People she loves who love her said things like:

    “Coaching is not a real profession. It’s a pyramid scheme—an unethical line of business.”

    “You’ve gone to the dark side.”

    “There are a lot of dodgy coaches out there taking advantage of people and stealing their money.”

    Brutal!

    I’ve heard similar things from other coaches and experienced some of that myself. You too?

    People love to poke fun at life coaches, especially. And coaching is often the butt of TV jokes.

    In the last few months, I’ve heard snide comments about coaching in a few audiobooks I’ve listened to.

    That’s ONE of the reasons I say:

    Don’t sell coaching session packages.

    Yes, use the skill for good in your business but don’t call yourself a coach.

    I realize this is controversial. How can a coach think about this dispassionately?

    In the coaching world, there’s a real issue that isn’t talked about much.

    Sometimes coaching relationships can stray off course, become counter productive or even toxic.

    It can feel like the client is being difficult. It’s worth looking at it dispassionately to see where your responsibility lies.

    Because your client is paying you for services, they may perceive a power difference between you.

    I meet a lot coaches who want to target leaders and even more since the pandemic.

    Do you want corporations to pay for your clients’ coaching?

    Or, do you want your clients to pay out of their own pocket?

    That decision will affect so many aspects of their business.

    There’s a belief out there that corporations will pay more for coaching.

    That’s only true IF:

    · You have the right kind of coaching certifications.

    · You are well networked in the corporate world.

    · You have significant leadership experience.

    · You’re good at pitching your offer to those with a budget.

    · You’re good at negotiating for what you want.

    I think coaches pay a hefty price when they target corporate paid clients.

    When clients are not making the investment, they are less accountable. And, when a 3rd party pays, they have a lot of expectations.

    Recently, I overheard a coach that I didn’t know saying that her business had been doing well and then over this summer everything came to an abrupt halt.

    Prospects weren’t showing up. People stopped opening emails and no body was engaging.

    Her income slowed way down, and was totally ready to give up on her business.

    And I thought to myself,

    A coach I worked with kept backsliding.

    In session, their certainty would click in.

    But a day or two later, that dissolved and in its place was paralyzing overwhelm and doubt.

    We’d meet again and their sense of purpose would roll back in. They left the session feeling sure of their direction and ready to take action, only to get stuck in another deep internal struggle.

    I remember that lost feeling as a new coach. I didn’t believe that I had what it takes, so I got in my own way.

    Comparison was the trigger.

    And that’s what stole away my client’s sense of purpose … they kept looking at other coach’s websites and social profiles.

    Shame spiraled into this dark story. Their internal dialogue was:

    • I’m not good enough.
    • This will never work.
    • Maybe I should give up!
