Mental illness is not an excuse for poor behavior. Ever. While the complexities of mental illness are real and challenging, our actions often speak louder than the words we say. With that said, the words we use can also change the dynamics and effectiveness of our communication. Accountability is also critical if we want to learn to manage anger and allow new patterns to re-program past ones. In this episode, Jennifer Stirling-Campbell gives both "bad" and "good" examples of how to communicate affectively in relationships, especially when we are angry. Again, while mental illness can make it difficult to control reactions, it does not excuse poor behavior.
Highlights:
-Use excuses, especially your "buts," wisely when self advocating.
-Using the word "but" can negate the meaning of sincere words you are trying to convey.
-You can be your best friend and biggest advocate when you learn to communicate affectively.
-Though mental illness makes "good" behavior more difficult, it is not an excuse for poor behavior.
-While compassion with self and others is important, accountability is crucial for affective communication in relationships.
-It is critical to express feelings without blaming others for your mental outbursts.
-Track your progress using a 3x5 card. Many daily victories add up faster than weekly ones.
-Accountability for actions leads to personal growth and improved relationships.
