About this listen

Are you a mental health therapist who lies awake at 2am replaying sessions in your head, wondering if you’ve done enough for your client? Do you ever feel isolated, overwhelmed, or unsure of your confidence as a clinician? Do you ever feel like you must be the only mental health therapist who feels this way? You’re not alone—we're here for you.

We've been there. We’ve lived the long days, the draining sessions, and the quiet car rides home where tears flow. We know the weight of secondary trauma, burnout, and self-doubt—and we also know the power of grit, resilience, and community. We're two trauma-trained, EMDR-certified, Somatic Experiencing-trained practice owners, and we created The Gritty Therapist as a safe space for clinicians who are tired of feeling like they’re the only ones struggling.

Each episode delivers practical interventions you can use tomorrow, grounded in trauma-informed care and real-life clinical practice. We’ll share the exact tools we’ve used to avoid burnout, rebuild confidence, and stay connected to our purpose and passion. You’ll also hear from guest therapists who’ve walked through the trenches and discovered how to grow their grit while actually having a life outside the therapy room.

Whether you’re holding space for vulnerable children, families, or adults, this podcast will remind you that you’re not alone. Together, we’ll explore strategies to strengthen your clinical skills, emotional resilience, and therapist community—all while keeping it real, compassionate, and relatable.

So grab your cold coffee or Diet Coke (Cathy’s favorite!) and join us for authentic conversations that help therapists thrive—not just survive—in their work.

  • Gettin' Gritty: Being Bad is Good
    Sep 23 2025

Ever feel like you’re “bad” at therapy—fumbling through EMDR, forgetting your manual, or replaying every word after a tough session? You’re not alone. In this episode of The Gritty Therapist, Stefanie Armstrong and Cathy Schweitzer share real stories of learning new trauma-informed tools, bombing sessions, and still showing up anyway.

We talk about why being bad is actually good—because grit and confidence only come from practicing in the mess. You’ll hear about our early EMDR fails, writing court letters that made us cringe, and the growth that came from sticking with it.

If you’re a trauma-trained or attachment-focused therapist who struggles with burnout, session insecurity, or nervous system overload, this episode will remind you: you can’t skip the grit.
