• Episode 55: Retention vs. Acquisition: What Really Grows Your Business
    Sep 22 2025

In this episode of Confessions From the Home Office, I’m digging into one of my favorite topics: customer experience and retention. While chasing new leads and closing fresh sales might feel exciting, the real growth often comes from the people already working with you. Long-term clients, some who’ve stayed with me for 7, 8, even 12 years, are the ones who have truly built my business.

I answer five big questions that come up again and again in consulting sessions, podcasts, and even conversations with other business owners:

    • Which matters more, acquiring new customers or keeping the ones you already have?

    • How can you create a customer experience people can’t help but share?

    • What’s the easiest way to turn happy clients into advocates for your brand?

    • How do you handle unhappy customers without damaging your reputation?

    • And how can small businesses build loyalty without expensive programs?

If you’ve ever wondered how to keep your clients coming back, and get them talking about you, this episode will give you practical, sustainable ideas you can start using right away.

  • Episode 54: Social Media Strategy, Your Top Questions Answered
    Sep 15 2025

In this episode of Confessions From the Home Office, I answer five of the most common social media strategy questions I hear from clients, colleagues, and fellow business owners. If you’ve ever felt stuck trying to keep up with shifting algorithms, struggling to balance AI tools with authentic content, or wondering if you’re spreading yourself too thin across platforms, you’re not alone!

I share what really matters when creating content that gets seen without paying for ads every time, why AI should be treated more like a helpful intern than a replacement for your voice, and how choosing focus over frenzy can help you avoid burnout while building traction. We also look at the real way to measure ROI on social media (spoiler: likes don’t pay the bills), and I give simple strategies for repurposing content across TikTok, Instagram, and LinkedIn without feeling like you’re just copy-pasting.

Along the way, I include real client stories, such as how one company boosted engagement by ditching “buy now” posts in favor of behind-the-scenes moments, and practical tips you can apply right away to your own social media.

If you’ve been second-guessing your strategy or spinning your wheels trying to keep up with every trend, this conversation will help you step back, simplify, and start creating content that actually works.

  • Episode 53: Tissues, Trello and TPLO Surgery
    Sep 8 2025

This week’s episode of Confessions From the Home Office is a little different, I almost didn’t hit record. My voice is shot, I’ve been knocked down with bronchitis (and probably COVID), my golden retriever Lola may need knee surgery, and I just learned about a new people tracker app. You'll have to listen to get the scoop on that.

In other words…life has been a lot.

But even in the middle of chaos, the business still has to run. In this episode, I share:

    • What it’s like when there’s no “sick note” when you’re your own boss

    • The near-meltdown I had at the vet’s office (Lola may need Instagram brand deals to pay for TPLO surgery)

    • Why systems and delegation kept everything moving even when I couldn’t

    • How Trello saved me from forgetting projects and client updates while I was medicated and exhausted

    • The importance of knowing your “backup people” before you need them

    • And why grace, buffer time, and documented processes belong in every business plan

I also give a sneak peek into something I’m building: a new membership program called Marketing Tech Skills That Pay the Bills. It’s designed to help you learn practical, in-demand tech skills that can boost your job, freelance opportunities, or side projects, without getting drowned by AI hype.

Sometimes running a business from home means powering through when you’d rather crawl back to bed. Other times, it means giving yourself permission to slow down because you’ve built the systems and support that let things keep moving.

So grab your tea (or cough syrup in my case) and join me for this week’s confession.

  • Episode 52: Speak Without Fear: Deb Sofield’s Secrets to Confident Communication
    Sep 1 2025

In this episode of Confessions From the Home Office, I talk with my good friend and nationally known speaker, Deb Sofield. Deb has spent her career coaching leaders, executives, students, and public figures all over the world on how to communicate with clarity and confidence. She’s also the first woman to serve as Commissioner of Public Works for the Greenville Water System since its founding in 1918, and she’s the author of five books on speaking, leadership, and encouragement.

We talk about the number one mistake people make when preparing for a presentation, and Deb doesn’t hold back...“good enough” is never good enough. She shares her tough-love advice on how to practice, prepare, and deliver a message that truly resonates. From auctioneer school to the political stage, Deb’s career has given her a unique perspective on how words and delivery can make or break opportunities.

You’ll hear practical tips that go beyond the usual “just breathe” advice, why you should never pop a mint before speaking, how to choose three memorable words to weave into your talk, and why showing up for others matters as much as what’s on your résumé. Whether you’re a student interviewing for your first job, a professional trying to stand out, or a leader speaking to thousands, Deb’s no-nonsense wisdom will give you tools you can put to work right away.

Be sure to check out her books, including Speak Without Fear and Perfecting Your Platform, and visit DebSofield.com for more resources. This conversation is full of stories, humor, and practical advice that will change the way you think about communicating.

  • Episode 51: Juggling Parents, Kids & Clients: The Real WFH Confession
    Aug 25 2025

In this episode, I'm stepping away from marketing strategies to talk about a season of life that is both challenging and full of love. Running a business from home is demanding enough, but what happens when you are also the go-to person for college-age kids, aging parents, and clients who count on you every day?

I share a recent scare with my dad, the constant stream of "hey I need help or did you see my Venmo" texts from my kids, and the daily reality of managing it all while trying to keep my business running smoothly. What could feel overwhelming is reframed through my many years of client service. I explain how staying calm under pressure, asking better questions before reacting, and reading between the lines, skills honed with clients, have unexpectedly prepared me for family emergencies and everyday surprises.

This episode is not about having it all figured out. It is a confession about the messy middle: the guilt, the fatigue, and the moments of wondering where there is space for yourself. I'm sharing practical strategies that keep me grounded, from time-blocking and delegation to ten-minute “micro rests” and laughter with friends. I'm also giving a shout out to the steady support of my husband, who shows up in ways big and small to remind me that I am not alone in carrying the load.

If you have ever felt like you are holding everything together for multiple generations, this conversation will remind you that you are not the only one. It is okay to admit it is hard, and it is also okay to let others in.

If this resonates with you, share it with a friend who is also juggling a lot. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is say it out loud: yes, this season is tough, and we are still doing it.

  • Episode 50: Your Competition Doesn't Pay Your Bills, Your Clients Do.
    Aug 18 2025

Do you ever catch yourself scrolling through Instagram, comparing your offers, your branding, or even your pricing to someone else’s? I’ve been there, more times than I’d like to admit. It feels like “research,” but in reality? It’s a competition trap that drains your energy and steals your momentum.

In this episode, I’m sharing my own confession about becoming a “competition stalker” and how I broke the cycle. We’ll talk about:

    • Why obsessing over competitors keeps you stuck and second-guessing yourself

    • The real cost of comparison (it’s more than just wasted time)

    • How to put yourself on a “competitor diet” and redirect that energy toward your clients

    • Building your own scorecard to measure progress that actually matters

    • Simple ways to create client experiences that bring referrals, repeat business, and stability

At the end of the day, your competitors aren’t paying your bills, your clients are. The more you focus on serving them well, the faster your business will grow.

This week, mute or unfollow the competitors who trigger your comparison cycle. Instead, use that time to serve your clients or improve your systems.

If this episode resonated with you, I’d love to hear your story. Send me a message! wendi@wendihill.com

  • Episode 49: Before You 'Just Start', Listen to This First
    Aug 11 2025

We’ve all heard it: Just start. You see it on Instagram quotes, printed on mugs, and dropped into motivational talks like it’s the magic key to success. And sometimes, it is. But other times? It’s a straight shot to burnout, half-finished projects, and a whole lot of frustration.

    In this episode, I’m sharing:

    • The times “just start” pushed me past fear and into big wins.

    • The times it led me straight into overwhelm and unfinished ideas.

    • My personal checklist for deciding when to go for it and when to put an idea on the “later” list.

You’ll learn how to keep the spirit of “just start” while avoiding the chaos it can cause, plus why the middle of a project, though rarely Instagram-worthy, is where the real magic happens.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you should jump in or hold back, this one’s for you.

Your takeaway this week: Decide if you’re in a starting season or a finishing season, and focus your energy accordingly.
