• Ethical Issues in Sports Medicine
    May 16 2024
On a regular basis in sports medicine, we are faced with ethical dilemmas. Whether or not we should allow kids to play certain sports based on injury risk, performance enhancement and equipment advances, treatment interventions, return to play decisions, and conflicts of interest to name a few. These issues may cause disagreements between the athlete and the physician or even among physicians as to how to best deal with various situations. During my pediatrics residency training, I had the privilege of learning from an ethicist who not only provided me with a process to improve my critical thinking and how to approach things from multiple views, but also was truly influential in shaping me into the physician I am today. Today on the podcast I have a pediatric physician who is considered a true expert on ethics. I hope you finish listening today with a new appreciation for ethics in medicine. Connect with The Host! Melatonin is a reasonable starting point, while sedating antidepressants could be considered as well. 18:31 Extended sleep can safely enhance athlete performance. 22:23 Computerized testing in athletes mirrors sleep clinic. 25:01 Using electronic devices before bed can affect sleep, altering the internal clock and suppressing the release of melatonin. The type of content consumed before bed can also impact sleep, potentially causing anxiety or other negative emotions. 26:52 Devices are helpful in reminding patients to prioritize sleep by providing a gauge of their sleep patterns. While not as detailed as medical sleep studies, they are relatively accurate in assessing whether a person is getting enough sleep. However, their accuracy may be limited when it comes to determining the quality of sleep. We are back to finish out Brain Injury Awareness Month looking at another component of the SCAT6. • Hang ‘Em High (1968) – A Perspective Review
    Mar 18 2024
In 1968, an already 38-year-old Clint Eastwood was made a producer of a movie that was going to be the "bridge" back to the states when it came to the Spaghetti Westerns and Hollywood's at-all interest in the modern Western Feature film. A number of years later, a young 8 year old Canadian kid dreamt of becoming a lawman. Later, he did, and at the center of that grand vision was the aforementioned bridge feature film. It's title is Hang 'Em High - 1968, directed by Ted Post, starring Clint Eastwood and a robust cast of Hollywood talent that is likely almost as long as this podcast. The sun is high on the horizon and the time to Hang 'Em High, with the help of a podcast host and four life-long lawmen hailing from a variety of parts of North America. This is the WhatCopsWatch Perspective Review of 1968's Hang 'Em High. • A Review of The Maddocks Questions — Brain Injury Awareness Month
    Mar 10 2024
March means two things in the world of sports medicine, not counting March Madness. The first is National Athletic Training Month. The second is Brain Injury Awareness Month. In the world of sport-related concussions, it’s an ideal time to continue to bring awareness about concussions, which are a mild traumatic brain injury. I thought for this year, I’d try to go through the SCAT, or the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool and talk about what we know from an evidence-based standpoint how each of the components function. Today we are going to tackle the Maddocks questions. It’s time to buckle up as we dive into the SCAT. Connect with The Host! Subscribe to This Podcast Now!
