Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Story
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Story
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Story
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Tomi Adeyemi conjures a stunning world of dark magic and danger in her West African-inspired fantasy debut Children of Blood and Bone.
They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.
Now we rise.
Zélie remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. When different clans ruled – Burners igniting flames, Tiders beckoning waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoning forth souls.
But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, anyone with powers was targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope. Only a few people remain with the power to use magic, and they must remain hidden.
Zélie is one such person. Now she has a chance to bring back magic to her people and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must learn to harness her powers and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
Danger lurks in Orïsha, where strange creatures prowl, and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to come to terms with the strength of her magic – and her growing feelings for an enemy.
The movie of Children of Blood and Bone is in development at Fox 2000/Temple Hill Productions with the incredible Karen Rosenfelt and Wyck Godfrey (Twilight, Maze Runner, The Fault In Our Stars) producing it.

Chillingly Beautiful
It is hard to say, I loved this book, when so much pain, passion, grief and vulnerability fill its pages. Instead I think I shall say my soul was touched with a deep realisation and understanding of both my reality and the books fantasy. I was deeply moved by the story and so very heartbroken by the things that motivated the Author to write it. I am not going to forget these characters or the voices they where echoing for a very long time.

Too long with not enough to keep my interest
I am not sure I enjoyed this, I had to speed up several times towards the last few chapters because I was a bit fed up of the story. Every turn in the story is predictable. Zaili seems almost bipolar, on one page she is confident, motivated and nothing could stop her, the next she is marred by self doubt and low self esteem and struggles to find a sliver of hope. This sort of yo yo ing was exhausting.
The author leaves the ending hanging, clearly there is a part 2. I don’t think I will be looking for it. The narration was pretty good though.

A must read for so many reasons
beautifully narrated, and the story line... if you like a bit of fantasy you will love it but the parallels to the real world and experience is chilling. This book may be in the fiction category but be prepared to be affected on a deep level.

This is a must read.
For all adventurous children, but especially for all adventurous girls. We need more female saviours, more diversity, and more heroes of colour. This book has all of those things and is written and performed beautifully. This is on my list for birthday gifts for everyone this year.
