About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A dashing Regency romance from the legendary Georgette Heyer, founder of the genre.

Captain John Staple's exploits against Napoleon's armies in the Iberian Peninsula have earned him the nickname 'Crazy Jack' amongst his comrades in the Dragoon Guards - but once the Battle of Waterloo brings the curtain down once and for all on the Napoleonic Wars, the boisterous, adventure-loving captain finds life in peacetime intolerably dull.

When the captain finds himself lost in the Pennines, he takes refuge at an unmanned toll-house. It's there that he encounters a woman of extraordinary qualities - and suddenly, his soldiering days pale away next to the adventure, and the romance of a lifetime....

I read this book decades ago as a teenager and enjoyed it then. This audible version had good sound and a decent narrator who made the characters very easy to differentiate. He mispronounced a couple of words but not enough to be too annoying. Overall a fun listen.

Enjoyable story with decent narration

An enjoyable read. The romance in this novel plays second fiddle to Heyer’s other favourite genre: mystery. The narrator did a great job of differentiating the cast of characters and bringing to life this Regency romp.

A Heyer Regency romance with a mystery spin

After you get through the drab first few chapters it becomes a gripping and thoroughly enjoyable story, which is very well performed

Fantastic all round

Georgette Heyer’s books are so well researched re time appropriate apparel and speach and her writing such a wonderful blend of wit and excitement that very few authors writing novels of the same genre measure up for me. She is brilliant! Narrator quite goodtoo.

Superb!
