Story
The post of Head Girl of Whitehall looks fantastic on anyone's resume. It places the lucky winner on equal terms to the staff, granting them authority, power, and responsibility that no other student can even dream of possessing. Naturally, Emily doesn't want it. But when she returns to Whitehall for her sixth and final year, she discovers that the staff has elected her to the post - and refusal isn't an option. Reluctantly, she starts to carry out her new duties, unaware that deadly enemies are waiting in the shadows, preparing themselves to strike at her when her back is turned.

Story
Years ago, Heart’s Eye, a school built on top of a nexus point, was attacked and captured by a necromancer. The nexus point was snuffed out, the handful of survivors forced to flee, and the once great school turned into a forward base for a necromantic invasion. All seemed lost, until Emily killed the necromancer and retook the school. Now, she intends to lay the building blocks for a university, a place where magical knowledge and mundane technology are brought together for the benefit of all. But dark secrets lie within the shadowed school.

A brutal uprising in the Kingdom of Alluvia has shaken the Allied Lands, and Emily finds herself accused of starting it. Desperate, all too aware the kingdom is on the verge of becoming a vortex of chaos, Emily travels to Alluvia in the hopes of calming both sides long enough to secure peace. Publisher's Summary
Everyone knows that the Tower of Alexis is impregnable...but Emily intends to prove them wrong.
The Kingdom of Zangaria has finally started its descent into civil war. King Randor has declared martial law, imprisoned the pregnant Crown Princess Alassa in the Tower of Alexis, and started preparations for a first strike against his enemies. The time has come for everyone to choose a side.
Emily has arrived in Alexis with the intention of freeing Alassa before her father can have her executed. But as Emily and her friends are drawn into a maelstrom of rebellious factions and crown loyalists and of commoners trying to escape the chaos and noblemen trying to make it worse, they find themselves faced with an insolvable problem.
If they manage to liberate Alassa - and put her on the throne - will there be anything left of Zangaria for her to rule?

I skipped several chapters and didn't miss much
When I can skip multiple chapters and still not miss any of the plot, the book is at best a 3 start to me. Performance was very good and Nuttall is one of my favorite authors so I will be back to read the next in the series.

this series isn't what it used to be
A lot of the same phrases and anecdotes from previous books about the commoners and nobles get reused. I keep hoping the main story will continue or Em and Co. will start setting up thier own power base. I feels like its stagnant. Em has not much in the way of char growth or story growth.

Another good book
I definitely enjoyed the book, the way the action and scenarios worked out was satisfying. I find that Christopher Nutall is able to write different stories that tackle new and different themes with this one being no different. So I imagine if you've made it this far you'll enjoy the book too. The ending was quite something.

A lot of twists in this one. It kept surprising me
The last couple of books foreshadowed trouble for Emily's old friends. The trouble comes to.The fore in a 3 or maybe 4 way civil war between the king, his daughter, rebellious nobles, and maybe the commoners, fed up with misrule.
