Publisher's Summary

Years ago, Heart’s Eye, a school built on top of a nexus point, was attacked and captured by a necromancer.

The nexus point was snuffed out, the handful of survivors forced to flee, and the once great school turned into a forward base for a necromantic invasion. All seemed lost, until Emily killed the necromancer and retook the school. Now, she intends to lay the building blocks for a university, a place where magical knowledge and mundane technology are brought together for the benefit of all.

But dark secrets lie within the shadowed school. What happened when Heart’s Eye fell? What were the tutors doing when the wards fell, and the necromancer invaded the school? And, as power flows back into the school, Emily finds herself caught between power struggles and a threat from the past, a shadow that has walked beside her for the last six years. It might bring about the end of everything.

In a school full of mirrors, who knows what they reflect?

Not the best of the series

Definitely not the best book of the series. I guess you have to read it to know what happened. Hopefully the next book is on par with the rest of the series.

Meh Lots of complaining

It was just ok, the ending was not very good and there was a lot of hyperventilation narration. The MC is supposed to not be a little girl anymore there is no need to read everything that is slightly negative with hysteria.

Fairy

The fairy part didn’t seem to flow so well. Somehow it seemed too contrived. It kind of came out of nowhere.

It's okay

Well, this book has me a little confused. I couldn't understand the connection of this story with the other books, especially the book "Past tense", since there are some references to what happened there.
It's a lighter book compared to the previous one, but even so, I think I'm a little disappointed. I expected something different, I don't know. The story is interesting, but I feel like something was missing... I hope the next book is better.

I really liked this one

the last book was a little disappointing. but this one had a lot of layers. it's inherent with alternate world stories. I love learning author's different takes. I'll probably listen to this one again as it was fun to follow and there weren't any plot twists that would keep me from enjoying it again.

Not my fav in a beloved series

It took me ages to get halfway through this when I bought the Kindle version...but finally I purchased the Audible recording and the experience was much better. These books are so extremely well read by Tavia Gilbert. I'm usually very enthused by the books in this series (barring a few aspects, like so very much corporal punishment at school, and an excess of anger and frustration), but though I thought this would be fine, once they got into the University-to-be, it just was not as interesting. I don't think I care to read about mindless hideous monsters, for one thing. I did enjoy the personal interactions among Emily and the ones she counts as friends. When a fairy was introduced into the plot, I thought, ah, at last we will get around to the promise Emily made very early in the series, but no, darn it. I'm anxious to move on to the next in the series and hoping for a five star book. Meanwhile, The Zero Enigma series has vaulted over Schooled in Magic as my favorite from the talented Nuttall. I see a complete re-reading of Schooled in Magic, though, at some point.

A departure from the norm

This book was a departure from the norm. Still wondering if this was good or bad. It kept my attention until the end. Decent.

It’s really really not good

I’m gonna be brutally honest. I’m a huge fan of Chris Nuttall, not just this series but others as well, and that’s why I feel totally justified in saying this. I think this is the worst book of his I’ve ever read. I love this series so much. I’ve read some of the books multiple times. The book after this, The Artful Apprentice, is one of my favorites in the series, but this one was really awful. I struggled to even finish it. It didn’t flow well. Parts of it were just incredibly boring. I mean again, I can’t praise this series enough, but one of the books had to be the worst one, and for me this was definitely it. I devoured The Artful Apprentice in 3 days, and I’m really looking forward to listening to the next one as well. I noticed that the next one is not being read by Tavia Gilbert though. I’m not sure why that is or how I feel about that, but I’m hoping for the best.

Strong female lead

Emily is a great balance of relatable and admirable. She’s strong but human. Falls in love without turning into a damsel in distress. I never get tired of this series.

Another great instalment in a great series

I love the schooled in magic series. There well written and well read, Christopher g. Nuttall's other books are just as good, he has a genuine talent and skill for keeping you hooked.
