The Kingdom of Zangaria has fallen into civil war. On one side, King Randor and his forces, determined to impose his rule over the entire kingdom; on another, the noblemen who want to crush the king; on a third, Princess Alassa and the Levellers.

Caught in the middle, Emily must steer a course between her loyalty to her friend, her duty to people who put their faith in her, and her fears for the future.

75% boring 24% good followed by a BS cliffhanger

It wasnt a tough to get through as 13 or 15 but the story doesnt really get moving until the last 20%. The majority of the book has no antagonist except a mystery assassin that is never caught or revealed. Just a lot of the same serf/noble and Emily's friends with benefits situations. The cliffhanger epilogue is awful.

The worst book in the series!

I really liked this series. The narrator is ok; she gets the job done. But the story line was all over the place. And Emily!? What the heck was Christopher trying to accomplish with her in this book? I guess it moves the story along, but just barely.

i really enjoyed this story

Our favorite sorceress has really come into her own, and demonstrates the power to survive war and trickery with little rest and forces arrayed against her. i love strong female lead characters, and this series has been cultivating one for 16 books.

admittedly however, if the next book centers around solving the last problem identified in this book... well ill have to skip it.... which is really annoying because these books are already to far apart. i just find THAT particular plotline tired... and as common as white undies. hopefully it is fixed quickly, and most of the next boom actually progresses into some of the foreshadowing from previous books... such as training witb Void, dealing with White Council, starting the school, hunting other Necros, etc.

oh... and folks say CN is sick... so if that is still true... get better fast! Not only because being sick is no good :(, but you have to hurry up and make next book for me :D

adjusted review

it was a disgrace to the characters and spell system you created. force punch, fireball, curse, hex rinse repeat with some variant overpowered version. forget Emily's ingenuity in combining science with magic. allude to nuke spell that will never be used on repeat. explain the kings skills with magic being impressive because he had so little to work with before and then make him another cheap antagonist necromancer. Forget the spells Emily was coming up with in previous war with necromancer that could be used in a civil war setting. Character development went 1 step forward in maturity 10 steps backwards in intelligence and ability. Where is the attention to detail you had during her battle with that dueling champion assassin? I am sorry, but every digital copy, audible, and physical copy of this book should be destroyed. frustratingly uneventful and serious lack of character development. This was Alyssa's battle more so than Emily's, but she was a static character the entire book.

Amazing

I love this series. There were a couple books in the middle that felt a bit slow but this one was fantastic and I couldn’t stop listening

Another great listen!

After binging on the entire series during work, I had to wait for this one to come out! So excited for another wonderful addition to this series. I can’t wait to hear what happens next. Written very well. Flowed smoothly with the storyline. Made my days go by faster 😊

The Saga Continues

When you invest your time and money into these stories, books-audio books; you can only hope for the best. I have enjoyed this entire series. I love when characters rise and fall. When they show humanity and defy the odds. There are portions of the story that are slower, but needed. Every other page can't be how powerful Emily is and how she fights. I want to know; will she fall in love? Will she see Void and the other supporting characters again, and when? This story is leading you somewhere and at the same time closing the loop on situations from other books.
I want to find out what happens next.

Hard to get into.

Unlike every other book in this series this one was really hard to get into and follow. It had enough good parts to keep going and it eventually came together towards the end.

Man! What an ending!

No spoilers here, but the ending of this book leaves me hungry for the next one. Can’t wait for it to be released.

Good but hard

It was yet again another brilliant book, however this one stumped me for a little I had it did half of it and then just found I wasn't following so left and then after a while re did all the other books then this one. It ends very well
