Publisher's Summary

From the multimillion-copy best-selling author Dr Michael Mosley comes the ground-breaking The Fast 800 Keto, a dynamic weight-loss program that combines a keto diet with low-calorie intermittent fasting.

Lose up to six kg in 21 days with this combined program for accelerated weight loss.

In The Fast 800 Keto, Dr Michael Mosley's dynamic new weight-loss program combines a ketogenic diet with low-calorie intermittent fasting, giving you the best of both worlds to achieve long-term success.

Dr Mosley presents the latest science on the ketogenic diet (when your body shifts from burning carbs to burning fat for fuel), explaining how keto works and why it is good for you. His ground-breaking new approach helps you get into ketosis faster so you can lose weight safely, improve mood and reduce blood pressure, inflammation and blood sugars. And the good news is that with The Fast 800 Keto, the carb and calorie levels are a little higher so the program is more sustainable.

Dr Mosley offers clear advice on which foods help put you into ketosis, which foods bring you out of it, how you can tell if you are producing ketones and how to ensure you are following the diet safely. With an easy-to-follow, step-by-step program that offers plenty of tips and advice to help you stay on track, the book details fascinating case studies, including some of the participants from Dr Mosley's new SBS TV series, along with 50 delicious, low-carb recipes and menu plans by Dr Clare Bailey.

Recommended efficient intro, despite some quibbles

I think Mosley's ideas are sound, and they are well presented. They should help many people - recommended reading. For me, his presentation of the Protein Leverage hypothesis was a useful reminder, and I had not known that this becomes more important as we age.

Quibbles:

* Mosley advocates lowering insulin by cold-turkey caloric restriction (CR) for 3 days, which is easier to explain, but involves more pain than is necessary. Myself, I gently switched from carbs to fats over a fortnight period, and then gently decreased my eating window (for timed eating), so no will-power was required when I started CR after a month and then a 3-day water fast a month after that. Because by then I had developed the machinery to get energy from fat, it was then easy to get my energy from my body fat as I 'ate myself', whereas previously I needed to eat at least 6 times per day.

* Saying that "sugar is not addictive because I am not addicted to sugar cubes" is like saying "caffeine is not addictive because I am not addicted to distilled coffee essence". Repeated "sugar-hits" repeatedly pleases our reward centre, and correlates with behaviour we would rather not do, so how is this not addiction?

* Mosley still thinks too much salt is a problem. afaik, upper limits for table salt have now been greatly increased, and previous strictures against Sodium have been debunked along with the fraudulent strictures against saturated fats. 5g/day Na (= 12 g per day of table salt) is what I deduced was necessary for me when losing 0.5 kg / week. btw, supermarket 'Lite Salt' is a cheap source of potassium, which might be necessary for those doing hours of vigorous exercise.

* I don't think Mosley adequately emphasises how bad keto can feel with inadequate electrolytes, and the dangers of bone mineral loss on keto with inadequate salts. (An n=1 plug here for adequate iodine to mitigate against fat-resident Hg being rapidly released during CR keto - non-iodised salt has its downside.)

* Afaik, vegetable oils, high GI carbohydrates, and/or sugars could more exactly explain the problems caused by generic 'processed food'.

* Mosley seems late to the party re keto - afaik there has been evidence in favour of keto for years before he started advocating it. I lost 12 kg during 2021 by using keto, with a disapproving family chorus saying "John, you don't need keto, just use Mosley's 5:2 Mediterranean Diet". Mosley advocates preparing a speech for anyone who tries to tell you that keto is unhealthy, so in future I will say "Boo-yah, now Mosley himself advocates starting with keto."

* I wonder if being late to the party makes Mosely feel the need to differentiate himself from those who preceded him, perhaps to guide them onto buying keto-shakes from his website to help with CR.

* Afaik the science is still uncertain re how best to stimulate intra-cellular autophagy and connective-tissue autophagy, so perhaps interspersing a variety of water+electrolyte fasts in between 800 kCal days might be a good idea - Fung and Attia have some useful anecdotes re fasting, and Vogel re carb-ups. Then again, Mosley may have a lot of 5:2 epidemiology.

Quibbles aside, if you crash thru Mosley's 3 days of initial discomfort and follow his protocols, then according to well-established science and experience you will rapidly and efficiently lose weight. So thanks Michael, better late than never.

Re other reviews:
* Nothing wrong with 50g per day of carbs.
* I thought this book is nicely concise - I would recommend it as an efficient introduction to weight loss.

Good information terrible narration

Informative with good information and solid fact. For me the narrators voice was painful and irritating to listen to. Would have been better if Daffy Duck wasn't the narrator.

Not a lot of difference to his previous 800 book

This book is very similar to his previous book. Definitely worth buying one or the other but not both.

excited

I was given this book in paper form and was struggling to take it all in so I downloaded the audible version. I have found following along with the paper book and listening at the same I've been able to take it all in, I'm excited to start and I've also convinced my husband to join me. After years of yoyo dieting I'm looking forward to putting all the advise into action. I'm so glad that I downloaded the audio vision, it has given me a better understanding.

Another great book by Mosley

I’ve read and enjoyed all of Mosley’s books and this one was no exception. There wasn’t anything particularly revolutionary in this book; if you’ve read Fast 800 and understand the basic components of a keto diet, you can probably guess everything that this book contains. Nonetheless it was a good read—succinct and engaging from start-to-finish.
