Thrawn and his allies race to save the Chiss Ascendancy from an unseen enemy in the second book in the epic Star Wars: Thrawn Ascendancy trilogy from best-selling author Timothy Zahn.

Thrawn's latest triumph still rests newly on his shoulders. Despite leading the Chiss to victory and bringing glory to the House of Mitth, the true threat to the Ascendancy has not yet been extinguished. Their foes do not send threats or ultimatums, or mass ships on the edge of the Chaos. Their weapons come cloaked in smiles and generosity: gifts offered freely. Services granted unconditionally.

Across the Ascendancy, seemingly inconsequential events could herald the doom of the Chiss. As Thrawn and the Expansionary Defense Fleet rally to uncover the enemy plot, they discover a chilling truth: rather than invade Chiss capitals or pillage their resources, they strike at the very foundation of the Ascendancy, seeking to widen the rifts between the Nine Ruling Families and the Forty Great Houses below. As rivalry and suspicion sow discord among allies, each warrior must decide what matters most to them: the security of their family, or the survival of the Ascendancy itself.

Not Zahn’s greatest

The best star wars book production yet and another great reading by Marc Thompson.

The whole book feels like filler to Thrawn’s story. The stakes are lower than ever and connections are made between odd characters with no relevance. Overall unenjoyable.

A bit disappointed.

This was easily the worst Thrawn book I've read yet. I have absolutely loved all the rebooted Thrawn series. I much prefer the more logical, less evil Thrawn character since he became Canon.
This book however I found much more boring than the previous books. Also there is too long spent with an alien and a couple than actual Thrawn. Bring back more of the Thrawn Tactical master-strokes!
Marc Thompson awesome as always.

Masterfully written, convoluted storyline narrated to perfection!

Another fabulous Thrawn book. Timothy Zahn is a master of subtly weaving seemingly unrelated threads into a cohesive and solid picture. The story was engaging and fascinating with excellent plot twists.
Marc Thompson is the perfect narrator - his ability to switch between voices gives each character a distinctive personality and the subtlety of his performance makes the whole story believable

Ascendancy world building.

Zahn continues to build intrigue and character layers into the Chiss and Thrawn. Though potentially the tricks do turn were less impressive in this outing. The story was still entertaining non the less.
Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Enthralling and great world building. More please!

I am absolutely loving this series so far.

Marc Thompson is the only man for the job for narrating Star Wars!

In its whole, this 2nd book has continued the tone bought forward from the first book. The main diversion from the 1st book is that this delves a lot deeper into the some of the more far reaching politics of the Ascendancy itself.
Some may dislike the amount of time spent away from Thrawn himself but I think that it is in integral part in creating a brand new setting for future stories to come out of this newly discovered part of the Star Wars Galaxy. And what better Author to do it then Timothy Zahn.
I cant wait till the next one later in the year! Additionally i think there is plenty of room in my library for books based on other characters already intrudced as well as ones ready to emerger from the Ascendancy, fingers crossed.

Master Narrator and voice actor

Marc Thompson is absolutely phenomenal, he's like 5 people in 1, so many voices it's hard to fathom...

The best so far

Better than the first book in the series, and I loved the first book.

Could not put this down, the B-Plot weaves so wonderfully into the main plot, or was the main plot the b plot? Hard to tell, it's so good

Once again, Marc Thompson killing it keeping me super immersed, and Timothy Zahn is at the top of his game, the space combat is so well written you will be on the edge of your seat.

A movie in your ears, just do yourself the favour of getting this

Thrawn

Too much ascendancy not enough Thrawn. I felt there was too much time spent on "beefing out" background characters. Maybe it will become relevant in the third part but I doubt it. Still good though.

Cream of the crop

I love the Thrawn books to varying degrees. Before this my favourite was Dark Force Rising but Greater Good has taken number one spot. Skillfully crafted with intricate interweving plotlines - as intricate as the metals on those broaches, that converge in an interesting way. Plus, great ending that left me ready for the next installment. Thank the force I won’t have to wait long. Loved every minute.
Great performance once again by Marc Thompson too.

Complex and a bit boring at times

I found the story a bit boring when it came to the sub plot. I enjoyed the first book as it focuses mainly on thrawn and his close contacts. I liked the ending but at times the story dragged along and I found the memories sections confusing. Overall it was decent but not as good as the first thrawn book.
