Inferno Squad Squandered

I'm a huge fan of Star Wars novels. I love the voice acting and especially the music intertwined with the different sounds of the Star Wars universe. So when I heard Inferno Squad would give us a look from the perspective of the Empire AND set up Battlefront II I was excited. Unfortunately, this book misses out on what I think was most important. And ultimately falls flat.

The opening Act is incredible. It puts the listener in one of the most iconic moments of the Star Wars universe but you see it through the eyes of an imperial tie fighter pilot. From there, the book transitions to the formation of Inferno Squad, an elite group of imperial operatives. Unfortunately, this elite group goes on some of the most uninteresting missions of all time. If you think they're going to be going in behind enemy lines, hitting the rebels where it hurts the most, and getting into intense Star ship fights with their state of the art starship then think again. The majority of this book is the Squad going undercover, trying to find out where the Dreamers are getting their information to coordinate their attacks. It's drawn out, boring, and does nothing for character development. The main character, Aiden, is made to be a strong female lead, but by the end, she seems like someone who should have never been given charge of Inferno Squad. I actually am upset that I read this book now because it will give me a negative outlook on her character in the Battlefront II campaign. Hopefully the story in the game will be better. In the end, this book suffers from what some of the other Star Wars novels suffer from -- telling a story that has no impact on the reader's knowledge of the Star Wars universe. The voiceover were great for the women characters and confusing for the men, but she did the best she could. Skip this one if you can

Good start

I really wanted to appreciate the view from the Imperial side and I did at first. Personally, the second and third acts sort of fell flat for me. Maybe I walked in wanting too much but I was hoping for a team coming together and instead I got wrapped up in minor conflicts. I appreciate the team and what it will become though

Terrible story and horrid ending.

Supposed to be an espionage story in the Empire. Turns into an emotional cringe fest.

not a bad story just not a good one

look, this book had no action and hardly any adventure. i cant say it was a bad story, it just wasnt a good one. preformance was fine but i at no point felt invested in this book. very boring all things considered. not what i expected for a "star wars" novel.

Inferno Squad: Let Down

I just want to say, I'm a huge Star Wars fan, but this book was awful. The book started out very well, but suddenly tripped and never regained balance. The issue is the story, very underwhelming, Especially with the hype surrounding Battlefront 2. It's a shame that Twilight Company wasn't implemented In the first Battlefront, which turned out to be rather entertaining story. This book failed in every aspect. I expected more special forces engagements, such as raids, helping stormtroopers during ambushes, escort duties, exfiltration of captured rebel leaders, and everything that will employ why this squad is supposed to be so bad ass. Instead the author and editor decided to do an CIA like infiltration mission, which in retrospect did not make any sense. The main character is supposed to be a woman of fierce dedication and leadership, but throughout the story she constantly lets her emotions dictate her motives. I don't want to get into spoilers, but the story is kind of leading for the main character, which many people already suspect, her joining the rebels in Battlefront 2. I pray that it isn't that predictable.

disappointing

the story was very bland and weak with no surprises. the use of a couple of question words made feel like the writer was trying too hard. didn't have a star wars feel at all. only thing that saved this review from a one star is that it is star wars.

A Strong Contender for Best Canon Novel!

Narration was perfect.

The story was told on amazing shades of grey rare for Star Wars, and the characters were lovable as I followed them through the twist and turns of the story. A must read if you are interested in the campaign of Battlefront II

A mild insight to the Inferno Squad.

An entertaining story of the Inferno Squad for the younger generation. The plot could have been stronger, the main characters were not as dynamic as hoped, weakness was in believability. The story lack the knowledge of military protocol, dreadful rational, the action was fair and mild. I was expecting much more blood and gut action but had vague cloak & dagger missions that were irrelevant side stories.

Plodding story with uneven narration

The overall story is slow moving and the title is a bit misleading. There's little action, and much of the book is spent trying to build inferno squad as sympathetic imperials on an impossible mission. A slow burn approach isnt nessesarily a bad thing, but the problem here is that outside of Iden Versio I didnt really care about the rest of the squad as characters, and I found some story elements very hard to believe even for Star Wars. The ending doesn't have a great payoff to save it and the overall story just falls flat thanks to characters and story beats I just didn't care about.

Janina Gavankar does an admirable job trying to narrate but at times her dialog reading was so cold and robotic it took me out of the story. I suspect this would have been a more enjoyable book without audio.

I'm a big fan of most of the new Star Wars canon on Audio but this one's a big miss.

Good, not great...

Not crucial reading for either the Battlefront II game or the universe in general, but it does draw a few things together from this point in the canon timeline, so it's easy to follow, and 'familiar'... certainly more so than Battlefront: Twilight Company I found. The plot is okay and builds in a simple but solid fashion... though the pacing seems uneven at times, and I found the pay off at the end a bit thin. It cements the origin of Iden's story arc fairly nicely, and offers an insight in to the Empires goings on after the events of A New Hope... an interesting counterpoint for the first book.

Gavankars reading of the story was one of the better aspects I thought, I found it less distracting than some of the mainstay narrators, a very sensible choice especially if your familiar with the game.

If you're new to SW audiobooks this one is low priority, if you're a canon junkie, there's enough here to make it worth a listen.

Great prequel story to the campaign

Loved it. Janina Gavankar obvious but perfect choice for the book. Plot was great with some insight into the characters back story.

Links everthing nicely

By no means is this on the same level as the aftermath or thrawn books but loved the throw backs two the clone wars by giving you hints along the way of who one of the characters might be and at the same time briefly explaining the back story for people that haven seen the clone wars also makes u really get attached two the characters so when u play battle front it just inhaces the game nicely audio was spot on couldn't fault it unlike some books on here where the narrator sounds blocky with this one it fits nicely with it being the voice actor for Iden from battle front the game so give the narration a nice flow

A luke warm inferno.

Good characters and a story that leaves you uncertain to the end. But it was as thrilling as a day time TV crime drama. This was Star Wars for the Hallmark channel.

it's so bland, no depth, it's cheesy, not a bit clever. Days of SW EU are sadly long gone

Didn't feel like a Starwars story.

The pace of this story is so slow it borders on being very boring. As far as the actual story line itself goes it's not all that bad but it's tone and style doesn't feel anything like a Starwars tale. I found myself getting very bored with two thirds of the book left. it's a miserable and slow listen, quite honestly there are better starwars books to read and this just felt like a waste of time.

It’s OK

One of the weaker new canon novels, not a particularly exciting story and the characters aren’t very interesting either.

I really liked Janina in the Battlefront game, but I think she struggles here. Quite a few of the characters voices seem to change throughout.

The production side is fairly weak too. Not great editing.

I liked it a lot!

The story is great and sweet but actually sad.
Perfect narration, the voices have a lot of emotion to them. Great audiobook
