Publisher's Summary

Learn how to recognize if your child is suffering from oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and deal with it with nonmedical solutions.

It can be quite difficult to recognize the difference between an emotional or stubborn child and a child with ODD. The syndrome mostly shows in teenagers but can manifest in younger children too. It’s completely normal in the course of a child’s development to show certain symptoms of defiance and anger, but the line can be easily crossed if you don’t react in time.

ODD has certain tell signs that will help you define whether your child is suffering from it.

This book will list and describe those ODD symptoms in detail so you can analyze your child’s behavior like a professional and take necessary steps.

Here’s just a fraction of what you’ll learn with this book:

  • How to recognize the ODD symptoms and differentiate between ODD behavioral pattern and “normal” outbursts
  • When and how to intervene and start working on your child’s behavior
  • How to define boundaries and establish yourself as an authoritative, positive figure
  • Techniques for managing and influencing your child’s emotions
  • Strategies for managing your own emotions and spreading calmness on your child
  • Techniques for guiding your children through different situations and teaching them how to deal with different emotions
  • Instructions on how to deal with students with ODD

Exactly what I needed

I got this today and I have read halfway through it. It is awesome. And really puts insight into what it is and why it goes over scenarios and other peoples challenges and the way to face them and deal with them so not all about it but actual situations and what to do and or say

Excellent Audiobook

Great book with some brilliant ideas in for when you're at the end of your tether. Unfortunately, there is no magic cure so it's more of a case of 'just keep swimming' but with some encouraging ideas.

Fantastic and amazing

I know a lot of people are concerned with labeling a behavior too much, but I implore you to go beyond the label- just ignore it - because this is one of the BEST books out there for anyone who deals with a child that is defiant on a consistent basis.

Exactly what I needed

This book has been very helpful. I thought the author was either describing my son or my son read the book. The most beneficial thing the book helped me do was modulate my reactions to my son's defiant behavior and gain insight for the motivation behind the defiant behavior.

There is a great deal with this audiobook

At first, the premise of this audiobook is a little hard to take in, but once you do, it is god sending. It took me 2 hearings to finally understand, believe, and then commit to the idea.

A massive audiobook about this topic

Positive reinforcement is included and the author differentiates Oppositional Defiant Disorder from conduct disorder and co-morbid conditions such as anxiety and depression.

An excellent way to assure this topic

This audiobook was an excellent introduction to the topic. It could be seen as a great review of things you might already know. It was lacking in examples but overall I felt it was useful.

Great reference guide

As a school social worker at a school that has a mixed population of students with external and internal behaviors, this is a MUST have! I became stumped when working with a gifted student and came across this book.

Full of useful insights and techniques

I listen this book because I have several grandchildren who are gifted but very emotionally intense, and I wanted some insight and understanding of their emotions. To my surprise, I also recognized myself as a child in many of the behaviors described by Christine Fonseca.

In so many ways, spot on

A great summary of the research and literature about this aspect of giftedness. I finally found a book that I felt was describing my child. I took copious notes. I will probably re-listen it as I continue working to help my child through life.

Excellent book

It's very practical and informative! I like the format and the helpful advice to parents and teachers, the interesting anecdotes, the helpful checklists, and sample dialogues, etc.
