Story
Julia Serano shares her experiences and insights - both pre- and post-transition - to reveal the ways in which fear, suspicion, and dismissiveness toward femininity shape our societal attitudes toward trans women, as well as gender and sexuality as a whole. Serano's well-honed arguments and pioneering advocacy stem from her ability to bridge the gap between the often-disparate biological and social perspectives on gender. In this provocative manifesto, she exposes how deep-rooted the cultural belief is that femininity is frivolous, weak, and passive.

Story
Hey, I'm Jamie, a 29-year-old trans guy from the UK. I've been transitioning for 12 years now after realising I was trans (by accident!) at sixteen years old. I knew I was a boy since the age of four, but realised whilst growing up that I was different. It was only in my teens that I found the words to express who I was and what I needed to do. Since then, I've been on testosterone for more than a decade - I know, I can't believe it either - I've also had top and bottom surgery and legally changed my sex, so I know a few things about the transitioning process and being trans!

Story
The Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS), based at the Tavistock and Portman Trust in North London, was set up initially to provide - for the most part - talking therapies to young people who were questioning their gender identity. But in the last decade GIDS has referred more than a thousand children, some as young as nine years old, for medication to block their puberty. In the same period, the number of referrals has exploded, increasing thirty-fold, while the profile of the patients has changed, from largely pre-pubescent boys to mostly adolescent girls.

Story
Gender identity ideology is about more than Twitter storms and using the right pronouns. In just 10 years, laws, company policies, school and university curricula, sport, medical protocols, and the media have been reshaped to privilege self-declared gender identity over biological sex. People are being shamed and silenced for attempting to understand the consequences of redefining "man" and "woman". While compassion for transgender lives is well-intentioned, it is stifling much-needed inquiry into the significance of our bodies.

Story
One of the most talked-about scholarly works of the past 50 years, Judith Butler's Gender Trouble is as celebrated as it is controversial. Arguing that traditional feminism is wrong to look to a natural, "essential" notion of the female, or indeed of sex or gender, Butler starts by questioning the category "woman" and continues in this vein with examinations of "the masculine" and "the feminine." Best known however, but also most often misinterpreted, is Butler's concept of gender as a reiterated social performance rather than the expression of a prior reality.

Story
Beginning with that most fundamental of questions - ''Do we really want what we say we want?'' - Fisher explores the relationship between desire and capitalism, and wonders what new forms of desire we might still excavate from the past, present, and future. From the emergence and failure of the counterculture in the 1970s to the continued development of his left-accelerationist line of thinking, this volume charts a tragically interrupted course for thinking about the raising of a new kind of consciousness, and the cultural and political implications of doing so.

Superb, thorough, nuanced, accessible, and simply field-defining volume
Stryker’s book is the definitive first point of reference for anyone intending to become acquainted with the topic, and equally for those who are already well-versed in it. Though chronologically ordered, the book’s narrative skillfully weaves in numerous topics and issues that intersect with this chronology — a glance at the table of contents and the main headings will provide a way better overview than what could possibly be offered here. Transgender History is clearly not a book about something that came, went, and now – at most – lends itself to multiple potential interpretations. It is a current and unfolding history of a diverse and dynamic people. Despite the clunkiness of my expression in the previous sentence, which mixes plural and singular forms, I’d still say “a people” not “a group”, precisely because as Stryker’s presentation of this material makes evident, who is and is not among these people is itself a constantly-evolving matter. Stryker’s thoroughness, combined with her flair, has produced an engaging and very accessible narrative that could be picked up and makes for a gripping read (or listen, for the Audible version) by scholars and lay people alike. It is a narrative that provides a very helpful and much appreciated lens through which to understand the shape of this topic. At the same time, her book also recognizes its own – and encourages the reader to engage in exercising their – capacity to shape what future events might unfold, and how they may eventually come to be understood. A superb contribution to scholarship, an exceptional book for anyone seeking to find a point of reference for the shape and context of their own or others’ trans* lives, and the Audible version was just a pleasure to listen to as (at least for my ears) Emily Cauldwell’s narration gets the tone just right.
