Story
Have you, a friend or family member been living with undiagnosed autism? For every visibly autistic person you meet, there are countless 'masked' people who pass as neurotypical. They don't fit the stereotypical mould of autism and are often forced by necessity to mask who they are, spending their entire lives trying to hide their autistic traits. In particular, there is evidence that autism remains significantly undiagnosed in women, people of colour, trans and gender non-conforming people, many of whom are only now starting to recognise those traits later in life.

Clem Bastow grew up feeling like she’d missed a key memo on human behaviour. She found the unspoken rules of social engagement confusing, arbitrary and often stressful. Friendships were hard, relationships harder and the office was a fluorescent-lit nightmare of anxiety. It wasn’t until Clem was diagnosed as autistic, at age 36, that things clicked into focus. Clem reflects as an autistic adult on her formative experiences as an undiagnosed young person, from the asphalt playground of St Joseph's Primary School in Melbourne to working as an entertainment journalist in Hollywood.

Publisher's Summary
A neurodivergent's guide to embracing your true self and finding your happily ever after.
Growing up, Chloé Hayden felt like she'd crash-landed on an alien planet where nothing made sense. Eye contact? Small talk? And why are you people so touch-oriented? She moved between 10 schools in 8 years, struggling to become a person she believed society would accept, and was eventually diagnosed with autism and ADHD. When a life-changing group of allies showed her that different did not mean less, she learned to celebrate her true voice and find her happily ever after.
This is a moving, at times funny story of how it feels to be neurodivergent as well as a practical guide, with advice for living with meltdowns and shutdowns, tips for finding supportive communities and much more.
Whether you're neurodivergent or supporting those who are, Different, Not Less will inspire you to create a more inclusive world where everyone feels like they belong.
Chloé Hayden is an award-winning actor and disability advocate, motivational speaker and social media influencer whose story of being 'different, not less' has attracted a worldwide following. She stars as Quinni in Heartbreak High, the Netflix remake of the iconic Australian series.

Life changing
Chloe is such a sweet and important voice in the autism community. Her role in Heart Break high made me feel so represented as an autistic person so when I heard about this book I knew I had to read it.
Her story is so similar to mine and the way she sees our lives as fairy tales helps me to see our challenges in such a more hopeful light.
This book includes so much good advice and relatable stories for autistic people. I highly recommend it

Must Read!
I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, and I am raising a child with ADHD as well. Neither of us have autism, but so many of the behaviors overlap. This book was fantastic for my personal growth and for helping me raise my kid. You can hear the passion in the author’s voice as she reads. Everyone - neurodivergent and neurotypical - should read this book.

absolutely exquisite autism memoir by an actually autistic stunning writer
i am absolutely in awe of this beautiful audiobook which is memoir / non-fiction and read by the author, chloe hayden, an actually autistic accomplished, knowledgeable, educated young adult sharing her lived experience as an audhd musician, writer, actor, artist, performer, entrepreneur (amongst many other things) in a world that is designed for allistic people. it is such a beautiful listen and read, that covers a variety of neurodivergent identities but obviously centered around chloe’s personal experiences and studies into autism from a young age through now, weaving in writings from the time certain events happened in her life as well as hindsight understanding and interpretation. the book also includes chapters about burn out, work, creativity, friendships, sexual assault, bullying, family dynamics, and relationships—also including a beautiful passage written by her then partner, now fiancé, on their experience as an allistic person in a romantic partnership with and autistic person which i found so loving, tender, stunning, and just a beautiful inclusion on love, communication, and trust and vulnerability in partnership. highly recommend to all people, but especially to anyone who is on the spectrum themselves, loves and cares for anyone on the spectrum, or just wants to educate themselves better on autistic people. love chloe hayden so much and hope she continues to write because i am absolutely in love with her mind and how she writes and expresses herself and the enthusiasm, joy, and beauty she brings into the world. this book existing is such a gift and makes me so happy to be alive in a time where i have the honor and opportunity to read it. 5 stars all around!

A bit of toxic positivity/privilege
Chloe Hayden has clearly found ways to be happy and successful in her life which is fantastic, but unfortunately this book drifts into toxic positivity. She encourages everyone to be unmasked in their autism and ignores that not all autistic people would be safe doing so (and some have been killed for doing so).
Talking about life as though it's a Disney story and as if everyone will have a 'happy ever after' could be quite harmful to some autistic people, as it just simply isn't true.
I think there's a balance to be struck between helping people see autism as 'different not less' and drifting into implying that life is fair and will somehow work out for autistic people. Unfortunately this book did not find that balance.

Amazing!!
I’ve both read the book and listened to this twice…
It’s both informative and I wish this book was available for me to give to my parents after my diagnosis.. it would give them a better picture of what I’m going through

Might be my new favourite book
This is a brilliant book and I think everyone should read it, not only does Chole share her story in an honest vulnerable way, she gives so much information. I listened to this, originally to see if I could get more information about growing up autistic as my son is in the process of being diagnosed, but I also realised that Chloe faced a lot of the same experiences as I did growing up (undiagnosed) , and has made me feel understood in a way I didn't think I would ever experience. She has such a wonderful way of story telling and I love that her work is accessible and easy to understand. It's such a nice change to read about neurodivergence written by someone who is actually autistic.

Brilliantly spoken
This audiobook portrays the experiences of many neurodivergent people (including myself). A must listen for any neurodivergent person or neurotypical who wants to support them.

Overall really interesting
It was really great to relate to the experiences of someone else with autism and have that idea that your brain does just work differently to other people and there were moments I got a bit emotional about it. The thing I kinda struggled with as the disney analogies and it could just be I am an overall fairly cynical person but yeah just struggled with some of the very apparent optimism but that is more of a me issue than maybe of the book. It was the first book I read about any form of neurodiversity since being diagnosed with ASD and ADHD and definitely in a frame of mind that the two are quite disabling together so finding other people who have these diagnoses is really helpful.
The audio aspect was really great and the sound quality was also fab.

Just brilliant. Refreshingly open and thought provoking
This is one of those books you want to buy in hard copy too as there were so many beautifully expressed views and thoughts that I’d like to take into my life and work.

Enjoyed everything 🙌🏾
Absolutely loved everything about this book, I related to so much of her experience it was hard to hear, but I also found it exciting to know that she had found a way to love life, this brings me hope for my daughter.
Thank you for telling us your journey so far xx

Chloe Hayden is a world asset: A true humanist.
I wish I learned 40 years earlier what Chloe Hayden teaches. She confirms my recognition that we are unapologetically who we are supposed to be and that we should be motivated by our individualism to benefit mankind.

Absolutely Phenomenal!
This book is so so so good. It felt like a warm hug from Olaf. In all honesty it has really helped me to have more courage in myself and understanding too. I have found it so difficult - like many - to find or listen to like minded people and feel that now, I am on a path where I am starting to do just that. Thank you so much Chloe for writing this amazing book and sharing your story. You are a jiminy Cricket. 🤗

A great autobiographic/self help book by an autistic person for autistic people
Chloe’s storytelling is fabulous and this book is such a must read for anyone entering their journey as a newly discovered autistic person. It is also a fantastic resources for loved ones. If there’s one book you should read, or listen to, in order to understand a neurodivergent friend, colleague or family member, it is this one.
