An Astra Militarum Audiobook

In the jungles of the Dolorosa Coil, a coalition of alien T'au and human deserters have waged war upon the Imperium for countless years.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

It's a typically weird and twisted tale from Peter Fehervari, with intriguing characters, a plot that will keep you guessing, and more mystery than you can shake a pulse rifle at.

THE STORY

Fresh Astra Militarum forces from the Arkhan Confederates are sent in to break the stalemate on Dolorosa Coil, and annihilate the xenos. But greater forces are at work, and the Confederates soon find themselves broken and scattered. As they fight a desperate guerrilla war, their only hope may lie in the hands of a disgraced commissar, hell-bent on revenge.

Peter Fehervari sets himself apart from other Black Library authors, The quality of his writing and story telling is a level above, where as others feel like they have been hired to write a story, Peter feels more like a well written author who just so happens to be set in the 40k setting (and not in the way where it is incidental but rather all the implications of being in 40k matter).

Fantastic book, made the kroot scary.

Literature, not pulp fiction.

It does very much feel like a 40k rendition of 'Heart of Darkness, but it is spun with it's own web and manages to rermain intriguing all the way to the conclusion. Feheravi does a good job of managing the lore pulling tidbits from other authors and weaving them in (the Loxatl making an appearence) and the narrator handles the flow very well.

Unlike the previous reviwer having a tantrum and moan, I can reccomend this to any reader that did enjoy Apocalypse now

It is essentially a mash of themes

I am grateful for the attempt at writing something above the usual trope-heavy Imperial view. the characters were intriguing. but I did feel the story started way too many threads co currently and left a great many of them underdeveloped and some just outright hanging. It did become hard to keep track at points.

Solid voice work though. great diversity in characters, and there were a lot of them.

intriguing premise that tries to do too much

An allegory of Dante’s Inferno, in the same vein as Heart of Darkness, and Apocalypse Now, and boasting a wide range of literary inspirations. Updating its themes and building upon its ideas in equal parts satire and horror, as all great Inferno allegories do. Replete with the potent imagery of contrapasso, Fehervari’s evocatively lurid prose immerses you in the oppressive, chaotic, and illucid atmosphere of Phaedra; and humanises Her damned souls, such that you can condemn them all the better. It’s only flaw is it sometimes sags under the weight of its ambitions, but so do many great works, and it’s thus completely forgivable for it. Spooner’s narration is excellent: perfectly capturing the brooding discontent simmering beneath the surface of the characters, and carrying that through into moments of furious passion and defeated vulnerability. Fire Caste is a novel good enough that it’s even easy to recommend to people with no interest in the Warhammer 40,000 setting, and is one I find myself dwelling on and returning to, again and again, throughout the years. Cannot be recommended enough.

A horrifying descent into the heart of darkness

Well this is just excellent! Definitely one of the more obscure black library books but entirely different and refreshing. Basically heart of darkness/apocalypse now crossed with the darkest elements of warhammer. Really interesting culture and characters and just overall very good. Hard recommend!

Superb
