About this listen

A Warhammer 40,000 Audiobook

For too long the Emperor’s Children have been denied their birthright. Their once-glorious Legion has been fractured into disparate warbands, condemned to ravage world after futile world in the pursuit of ambition and excess. But no longer.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Fulgrim has a simple job for his sons, but what happens when it turns out to be far more complicated than it seems? Dive into the fractious nature of the Emperor's Children when things aren't quite going their way – rife with arrogance, internecine conflict, and divergent viewpoints.

THE STORY

Lord Fulgrim – ascended Primarch of the III Legion, the Perfect Son, the Emperor-in-Waiting – has issued a challenge to his scattered warriors: vanquish the Imperial world of Crucible, and bring him the head of the Black Templar charged with its defence.

But Fulgrim’s plans go far beyond the conquest of a single planet, and what should have been a swift and bloody offensive turns into a gruelling siege. With success uncertain, a world in flames around them, and the Legion turning their weapons inwards as well as out, the would-be champions are forced to confront a bitter truth. What must they sacrifice for victory and the favour of their Primarch, and what will be left of them when the war is over?

Good but lacking direction

Performance is amazing some of the characters are great but a little random as to why they do things in the story. Some moments had me loving the human element of the story only for those same characters to do something out of character and absolutely stupid!

Not bad listen but definitely had better.

Misleading title - should have been about fulgrim..

Need more production value for a army release book. Misleading title, fulgrim is hardly in it and follows some no names. very disappointed. with a primarch name as the title, he should be the lead character.

I really enjoyed this new addition to the black library.

I don’t understand why this novel got such a bad backlash. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the 3rd legion or not. A great addition to the black library and worth a listen.

I almost missed it due to the other reviews and was pleasantly surprised by how decent the novel ended up being.

Immeasurable Disappointment - No spoilers

A fantastic first 30 minutes of the novel is the highlight of this book from a story perspective. Then is an inevitable nose dive from there.
This story I'm sure was designed to do two things
1. Produce hype for the release of the new faction to new/existing customers
2. Sell Emperor's children models (particularly fulgrim)
Do they achieve these objectives? absolutely not.
In terms of hyping up the faction themselves or even the primarch, it's almost non existent. The book is 50% Cadia/ Black Templars, 42% 3 random Emperor's children characters (each as uninteresting as the last) and 8% Fulgrim.
In contrast, Lion El Johnson's release novel gave us his inner thoughts, his feelings on events post heresy, his maturing and development that changed his perspectives. Literally nothing from Fulgrim. Just the odd random inclusion throughout the story then gone again.
And secondly produce interest in purchasing EC models? Sure! Do you like Havocs? Venom crawlers? Raptors? Obliterators? as mentioned in the story. Too bad, you can play none of those in this faction.
Do you like the look of the models for Noise Marines? Kokophonist? Lord Exultant? Infractors? and want to listen/read them slaying for Slaanesh? too bad again, maybe one mention of a noise marine in this 10 hour story. Then nothing.

An actual solid advertisement for Cadians and Black Templars, which I guess is the typical GW mantra of appeasing the Valraks of the hobby. The incessant need to give attention and focus into the Emperor's Champion and Cadians is just so annoyingly unnecessary and I feel just makes the Emp Champ look pathetic in comparison to how the original Emp Champ (Sigismund) was written in the Siege of Terra series.

The true highlight of this performance is the narration of Andrew Spooner, I've listened to his work before and just like then a fantastic performance.

All in all, entirely forgettable just like Angrons release novel and a failure to give us a much needed deeper dive into Fulgrims mind, produce hype for the faction or more importantly to GW, sell models.
