About this listen

A Warhammer 40,000 Audiobook

The galactic core is beset by warp storms of a fury the Leagues of Votann have not seen for ten millennia. With both the Imperium of Man and the powers of the warp encroaching further and further onto the Kin’s territories, war reigns supreme amongst the coreward stars.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Hear what happens when a Hernkyn Prospect leader and her companions are plunged into a venture beyond their wildest expectations, and find themselves set against an ancient, deadly foe guarding a mysterious but magnificent prize.

THE STORY

Myrtun Dammergot, leader for the Kindred of the Eternal Starforge, is in her element, exploiting the unending conflict and living a life of adventure, without the unwanted burden of responsibility.

But when a messenger from her Kindred’s Hold ship brings news that upends everything she knows, responsibility, challenges, and opportunity come knocking.

The fact there is a Votann book is very, very welcome. Unfortunately, the narration feels more like a sleepy lecturer reading from a textbook rather than a story about space dwarves.

Flat narration but interesting depth with the Votann

Good story, different from the usual warhammer 40k, will be interesting to see where it hours from here

Different direction

This book fleshes out the kin and really “humanises” them. I would love to hear more books about the votan if it’s anything like this it’ll be good

Good for a 40k book

a book which lacks direction and character in every sense, the plot takes forever to go anywhere significant, all the characters feel like player characters out of DND and story feels like a half baked campaign.

meandering and unfocused

I really wanted to enjoy this book but the narration is absolutely awful. The narrator sounds as though she is reading news headlines the entire time. I felt no immersion and honestly couldn't tell one character from another as the narrator only had one dull tone. I really wanted to learn more about the league but I just couldn't take in what was being said or be interested in the characters. This book should have been read by someone able to mimic some northern or Scandinavian accents. Instead you have a narration that better suited to children's books. Really disappointed.

worst narrator

I was looking forward to a leagues of votann novel, but this is not it bored me to tears

nothing

All the main characters for this Dwarf tale are female, for no reason that’s explained. Seems like a spit in the face to Squat fans.
Neither the Kâhl nor the Grimnyr go through any sort of hero’s journey.
I didn’t find any characters in this whole story to be interesting or compelling.
I used to like everything by Gav but his last few have been not great.

I have never previously complained about a narrator from Black Library, but Deborah Michael’s was simply a bad choice for Games Workshops first Votann book. Deborah struggled with the main characters and was pretty bad with the rest of the cast.
I can think of eight Black Library narrators who would have given a more Dwarfish performance.

The references to the old Squat lore of Berserkers and Ancestor Lords was cool. Lots of tabletop units got a mention.
The battle sequences were good.
The build up for the finale was also good.

I hope the next Votann book is better..

Not a good introduction to the Votaan
