Story
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Publisher's Summary
The celebrated modern classic from the number one best-selling writer.
THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD 'BOOK OF THE YEAR'
AN ACCLAIMED WEST END THEATRE PRODUCTION
This is what he remembers, as he sits by the ocean at the end of the lane:
A dead man on the back seat of the car and warm milk at the farmhouse.
An ancient little girl and an old woman who saw the moon being made.
A beautiful housekeeper with a monstrous smile.
And dark forces woken that were best left undisturbed.
They are memories hard to believe, waiting at the edges of things. The recollections of a man who thought he was lost but is now, perhaps, remembering a time when he was saved....
NEIL GAIMAN.

Critic Reviews
"Neil Gaiman's entire body of work is a feat of elegant sorcery. He writes with such assurance and originality that the reader has no choice but to surrender to a waking dream," (Armistead Maupin)
"Some books just swallow you up, heart and soul." (Joanne Harris)
"Summons both the powerlessness and wonder of childhood, and the complicated landscape of memory and forgetting." (Guardian)

Into the Ocean!
This is a great read and I highly recommend it to you. It is compellingly authentic because the writer has put bits of himself into it and it is easy to tell which bits; they resonate so strongly. His style of narration is engaging and unpretentious, like a funny friend telling you a story. There is lots of magic and plenty of scary bits but for me what Gaiman does best is illuminate human relationships and help you to see why people do the things they do. What I liked most about this story is that it made me feel that it was ok, after all, to prefer reading a book to going to a party. If you read the novel you will see what I mean.

Beautiful constructed story, great narration
Neil Gaiman narrates this wonderful fantasy book. His performance is fantastic. He could read a shopping list and it would sound amazing. I loved the story and it stuck with for several months after I listened to the book. Highly recommend.

A most unlikely tale
Appreciate Neil's imagination which is both broad and deep. Well told and suspenseful, briefly drawing the veil between worlds for a fascinating glimpse.

awesome
the ocean at the end of the lane by neil gaiman. in true typical gaiman fashion this book did not disappoint. the story was brilliant. The characters were so realistic that I could have known these people. and at times, I was biting my nails, sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next and then sadness but happiness as to the truth and honesty of the characters unfolded.
loved it.
