Publisher's Summary

Warrior queens and Roman invaders do battle in the final volume of this thrilling epic fantasy trilogy.

Caesar's soldiers have murdered, massacred and pillaged their way through Gaul and loom on the far side of the sea, ready to descend upon Britain; with them are an unstoppable legion of men twisted by dark magic.

Somehow Queen Lowa must repel the invasion, although her best general is dead and her young druid powerless. She faces impossible odds, but when the alternative is death or slavery, a warrior queen will do whatever it takes to save her people.

Every empire has its downfall.

    "Brilliant Trilogy!"
If you could sum up Reign of Iron in three words, what would they be?

"Absolutely loved it." The series flows easily and the characterisation is easily believed. Sad to finish the final book - as I would love to see the characters move forward - but I think this is always the reflection of a great story!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Reign of Iron?

Throughout all three books, I have smiled at the expletives coming from the character, Doug - which was infective and became part of the dialogue with the other characters. One of the best fantasy stories I've read/ listened to, for a long time! (I also thought the final post-script was very funny!)

What about Sean Barrett’s performance did you like?

Brilliantly delivered and a pleasure to listen to! A real master of the art of story telling.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Sure - used any and every opportunity to listen to the story.

    Any additional comments?

Looking forward to seeing what this author does next!

I'm going to miss these people. I don't think I've enjoyed a trilogy as much as this one.

    "Fabulous series!"

I am sad this is over! I feel like Dug and Spring and Lowa have been my friends over the past few weeks - and even Atlas and Chimanka, which surprises me.

Masterful job Mr Watson - I look forward to reading more of your work in the future. And an awesome job done by the narrator too.

    "Excellent Trilogy"
    Any additional comments?

This series has been thrilling and engaging all the way through. Angus Watson has a distinct storytelling style and the books are innovative and exciting. The pace doesn't let up all the way through and this final book is a perfect climax to the trilogy.

What did you like most about Reign of Iron?

The plethora of badger based swearing was brilliant.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Reign of Iron?

Badger's spunk trumpet.. is perhaps the most memorable turn of phrase I have heard.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

    The ending was fantastic.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes.. there were several, but no spoilers shall be placed here. Having come to love the characters over the whole trilogy any situation where evil befalls any of them has the potential to be moving.

    Any additional comments?

The 'of Iron' trilogy are great books to listen to, Sean Barrett does a brilliant job of bringing the characters to life. I can't remember another book which has moved me and made me laugh so much.

Would you listen to Reign of Iron again? Why?

Excellent end to a great trilogy. It's refreshing to read a well crafted book that actually finishes after three books!

"Wallop! Watson Delivers on His Promise!!!"

One of those rare series that end all too quickly leaving you feel very glad that you read it but also a little sad that it's over. This one has it all for me; a great story, great characters and some on the nail humour. The key point when reviewing the final book of a trilogy is obviously to confirm that it delivers on the promise the first two books made and this one does that in spades!

A small note, if you are reading reviews of the final book before starting the series or reading the second book the final paragraph of this review contains a spoiler. It's also once again worth mentioning that at the time of writing Audible has this under historical fiction. It does indeed have a strong historical ring to it but it has very strong fantasy elements in it too, this isn't a purely historical series.

That said there is so much to like here. Great characters like Ragnull, strong female leads and so much good humour including what may be the world's first Praetorian double act! Caesar is superb and there is a good old-fashioned, black-hearted villain in Felix. I think the treatment of magic and the way it is linked to life force and emotion is also very well done.

The tactics and the ebb and flow of the Roman invasions are both imaginative and quite riveting. The battle scenes give each side their moments of triumph and despair giving a real depth to the campaigning. Sean Barrett is on great form throughout and gives a performance that elevates the book and gives it excellent momentum. The very ending was something that I enjoyed a great deal but if anything is going to split opinions that could just be it.

One doubt that I did harbour coming into this was how big a hole Dug might leave given the critical role he had played up until now. I needn't have worried, from near the very start it's obvious there will be plenty of badger-related cursing and that Dug's unique wisdom will still play a role. The most important thing you can say about this book is that Watson fully delivers on the promise he makes at the start of the series to tell us "what really happened" when the Romans mysteriously came to Britain and then left shortly afterwards and why it took them so long to return. This is an author I am going to follow with huge interest.

"Great finish to a great series"

Great ending to the series and really well written. I want more of the characters. The build up to the final battle is great and love how the author takes you into the deluded minds of this characters

"Good story but a little too much fantasy at times"
What did you like most about Reign of Iron?

I liked the blend of historical action and fantasy in this series. However I did feel the fantasy aspect in the final book did overtake things too much, obscuring the history, which became a side line to the story. This I feel undermined the main plot somewhat, as if a magic wand would make it alright in the end. However I still liked this series a lot and still recommend it.
