Publisher's Summary

The deck bucked under her feet, and she was hurtled backwards on to the bunk again, and the blast of a massive explosion ripped through the ship. 'What is happening?' she screamed.

Love in a time of war. Hope in a time of danger.

One of the greatest fighter pilots of the Great War, Michael Courtney is saved by the French noblewoman Centaine de Thiry when he crashes near her home. Soon after, Centaine finds herself alone and carrying Michael's child and must travel across the ocean to join his family in South Africa.

But no journey is ever simple, and a pregnant Centaine finds herself shipwrecked in shark-infested waters off Africa's notorious Skeleton Coast, a deadly swim away from the sun-bleached desert that will see her defenceless and alone. When hope arrives, she has no way of knowing if she will be saved - or left in greater danger than ever before....

West coast of Namibia - a literary delight

Wilbur Smith does extraordinarily justice to the naïvety, skill, loveliness and brave earthiness of the Bushman people.

At the same time, I who have spent much time in Walvis, the Kuiseb, the surrounding sand dunes and dry (but very alive) desert am deeply grateful the author who has described the desolation, harshness, beauty, brutal awesomeness of the region.

Listening to this book brought back vivid memories of that land… oh so very beautiful if you have the courage to embrace it!

Bravo!

Loved this book!

This was the first in the “Courtney” series and I can’t wait to listen to the next!! More enjoyable than the “Ancient Egypt” series which were great stories but too graphic in the description of violence.

Venture into the Namibian Desert

What a journey, against the backdrop of war Smith transports us from the lush, green countryside of France to the arid and unforgiving harshness of the Namibian desert. And so too we journey from the heights and exhilaration of new love to the depths of grief and suffering, to taking a deep breath with a happy reunion and hope only to sigh as we face hardship and the struggle for survival to end on the edge of loneliness. Another masterfully told story.

Real Psge Turner!

Don't start if you csn't spend sime time with
Cobstaurs, a young lady who is only 17 at the beginnungs of the book, taking place in world War 1 France. Your sttention to finding out the resolutuin of the next crisis in it, will she make it?? She has strength in many a crisis' but will she continue to be brave?

Excellent story in a great series.

Although lacking the personal connection I especially felt in the preceding books, this was a great story, that left me hanging a bit. Won't divulge why....

A riveting story from beginning to end, although it ended rather abruptly. Need to buy the sequel to see what happens.

A must for anyone who has read the Courtney books

This story is simply about the journey that Michael Courtney takes to meeting Centaine and then her journeys through life to the point of becoming a member of the Courtney family in Africa.

Sounds very succinct but the depth of story telling is true to Wilbur Smith's unique ability to master surroundings and the impact the world has on the individuals in the book and for the reader.

Excellent narration by Sean Barrett as always.

not his best

WB is best writing about south east Africa and adventure. But his strength is not writing about women; who I feel he portrays as 2 dimensional, romance craving damsels. given that the protagonist is a woman, makes for a dull read. the story also lingers in Europe Europe far too long, out of the writers comfort zone. when the story is in africa it still feels like an alien world to WB, rather than his intimate personal experience. It also lacks a villain, something WB often writes well. so, not a great book.

A spellbinding listen

l am sorry to have finished this book and feel a sense of loss. it appealed to stereotypes of men being macho, women beautiful and the characters powerfully affluent.

The narrator was excellent using a wide range of voices and accents.
l thought the action scenes were very well done particularly the one with the lion

Brilliant

The Courtney series is very good. Sean Barrett is probably the best narrator from all of the hundreds of books I've listened to.
