Publisher's Summary

Eccentric multimillionaire Cadmus Cole hires Ellery Queen to investigate a case but won't say what it is. When Cole dies mysteriously at sea, Queen and his partner, Beau Rummell, must navigate a thicket of complications that includes a fifty-million-dollar legacy, two beautiful but avaricious women vying for the inheritance, a will with some odd provisions, and even a phony Ellery Queen.

A charming Ellery Queen with the unusual addition of a partner

This addition to the Ellery Queen catalogue has all the usual eloquence and charm of his previous crime stories with the addition of a very likeable ‘Watson’ to Ellery’s ‘Holmes’. Perhaps it is closer to compère them to Wolfe and Archie, though Wolfe is far too dry a character to really adjunct to Ellery Queen. Would have liked to see more of Beau Rummell but it seems his was a one time engagement.
