Publisher's Summary

It is deep winter. The darkness is unending. The private detective named Jaycob Eklund has vanished, and Charlie Parker is dispatched to track him down. Parker's employer, Edgar Ross, an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has his own reasons for wanting Eklund found. Eklund is no ordinary investigator. He is obsessively tracking a series of homicides and disappearances, each linked to reports of hauntings. Now Parker will be drawn into Eklund's world, a realm in which the monstrous Mother rules a crumbling criminal empire, in which men strike bargains with angels, and in which the innocent and guilty alike are pawns in a game of ghosts.

    "Disappointing"

I've listened to all of the Charlie Parker series over the past 18 months and I've thoroughly enjoyed most if not quite all of them. I eagerly bought this one on the day of release but to my disappointment it's not on the same level as any of the others. It doesn't seem to move the main story arch along much and very little seemed to happen in the entire book.

I'm sure I'll try the next in the series when it comes out but with the mediocre A Game of Ghosts and being at book 15 in a series I think I'm losing interest.

    "The voices in my head"

Yet another outstanding reading that had me staying awake to listen to the next chapter and the next. When I first heard Jeff Harding read the voices of Angel and Louis, it was as if they leaped from the page. I didn't have a preconceived idea of their voices in my head, but his reading seems absolutely spot on.
The gradual development of the role of Parker's daughter adds an extra layer to a fascinating series and I can't wait for the next one.

"One of the best Parker books yet."

The Parker books show no sign of slowing down, in fact they are getting better and better, which as a fan I didn't think was possible.

Without giving anything thing away all I can say is the writing, setting and characters are all haunting and as cold as the Maine winters.

    "Weird but rivetting!"

Complex plot, characters who confound, but the whole brilliantly interpreted by Mr. Harding. Where/what next?

"John Connolly - one of the best authors"

Every book I have ever read/listened to by Mr Connolly is excellent, and this is no exception. My only regret s that I couldn't stop listening and now it's over...the imagination, characterisation and narration are breathtaking...

    "Patience required"
Would you consider the audio edition of A Game of Ghosts to be better than the print version?

I can't judge not having read the paper version. However, I fear I would have abandoned it after a hundred pages.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    Anticlimatic.

Have you listened to any of Jeff Harding’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Jeff Harding is my narrator of choice...his range of vocal expressions is wonderful. Sadly this story, though read with his usual class, doesn't do the writer or Charlie Parker justice.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were times when I struggled to stay interested in the plot...for me, as an addict to audiobooks, is unusual.

    Any additional comments?

A loosely woven set of complicated threads that covered a poor story.
