About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Kitty Charing's life-changing inheritance comes with a catch.

Her eccentric and childless guardian, Mr. Penicuik, is leaving Kitty all of his vast fortune - but with one condition. She must marry one of his five grand-nephews. However, Kitty's clear favourite - the rakish Jack Westruther - doesn't appear at all interested in the arrangement. To make Jack jealous, Kitty impulsively convinces his cousin, the kind-hearted and chivalrous Freddy Standen, to enter into a pretend engagement.

But the more time she spends with Freddy, the more Kitty wonders whether Jack is the right choice after all....

"One of my perennial comfort authors. Heyer's books are as incisively witty and quietly subversive as any of Jane Austen's'." (Joanne Harris)

"Fabulously witty." (Stephen Fry)

I've always had a soft spot for this GH novel and its atypical hero, and this narrator brought each character to life so well that it was a delight to listen.

Love the narrator

Kitty Charing takes her chance to join London society by talking one of her guardian’s grand nephews into a sham engagement. The innocence resulting from her country upbringing combined with her wish to help others in trouble leads her be involved in situations where she is made aware that all is not necessarily as it seems. The voice acting is very good and captures each character well. I enjoyed this new rendition of an old favorite tale from Georgette Heyer and will listen to it again.

A lively story of an ingénue

I don’t know how the story ended up, which is a shame, this was possibly the worst narration I’d come across in a period romance. So awful.
After reading some other reviews I’m sure sure how anyone thought it was okay. Possibly just not what I’m used to.

Dreadful narration

The best Georgette Heyer novel, however it's been sadly let down by a poor choice of narrator.

great story, terrible narrator.
