About this listen

On an Imperial outpost world on the fringes of tau space, the renowned Commissar Ciaphas Cain and his fractious regiment of Valhallan Guard, newly created from the remnants of two devastated units, find themselves in the middle of a war.

As the Astra Militarum struggle to contain worldwide civil insurrection, can the wily Commissar Cain identify the real villain before the planet is lost to the Imperium forever?

Definitely worth a listen, the writing is a little repetitive with its characterisation.

Didn't stop it from listening to the entire thing in a single sitting on a long flight.

Rally enjoyable!

The beginning of my favourite Warhammer saga apart from Dan Adnett's Gaunts Ghosts series. A good laugh, believable characters and world building. Recommended for any interested in character driven or first person narrative

A truly grand beginning

I loved almost the entirety of this book from beginning to end. Just being able to witness an Imperial character that isn't a noble and honourable soldier (or Astartes for that matter) was extremely refreshing to listen to.

Clearly the beginning of a great series

loved it so much I'm starting guard as my new army as I collect the hobby too

Made me want to build and paint guard

It's quite good - somewhat like Discworld it wears it's influence on its sleeve. However it's a funny and light Blackadder-esque romp through space which loves quickly and works well overall.

Good for listening to while painting a bunch of model miniatures!

Silly and Funny, with a Grimdark background

For 40k fans who haven't encountered the series before, Ciaphas Cain offers a look into the setting through the eyes of the enigmatic but entertaining commisar protagonist.

For newcomers, Cain offers an approachable entry point to the fiction, although keep in mind very few 40k books outside of this series share the tone of Ciaphas Cain

The narration is excellent as well.

One Great Ride

excellent narration of a fairly standard 'imperium world in trouble' story. Fairly predictable but a good ride nonetheless

Faultless narration

Well narrated story with a brilliant back and forth between the narrators.

A great start into W40K lore for people who are just dipping their feet in. A good knowledge of the lore will bring out the most of the story but they explain enough to get by without dumbing it down.

A great story with even better narration.
