Publisher's Summary

A Warhammer 40,000 novel

When he discovers a prize that could change the face of the galaxy, disgraced Rogue Trader Janus Draik recruits a team to treasure-seeking misfits to claim it. But danger lurks in the darkness…

Listen to it because: The full story behind the Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress game is revealed! Join Janus Draik and his crew as they venture into the depths of the fortress and encounter all manner of deadly foes.

The story: There are those in the great expanse of the galaxy that seek profit wherever it is to be found: the deal makers, the opportunists and explorers – the Rogue Traders. Granted power by an ancient charter, sanctioned by the Emperor Himself, these scoundrels, entrepreneurs and adventurers roam the galaxy in search of fortune and glory.

None perhaps are as hungry for these twin vices as Janus Draik. All but disowned by his wealthy family, regarded as a wayward son of ill repute and little potential, Draik knows he must restore his fortunes soon or his misadventures will see him destitute and discarded.

So it is then that when he finds a truly exceptional prize, one that will return him to his deserved station, Draik recruits a crew of fellow treasure seekers and sets them to the task. Draik's obsession is all-consuming, and he will risk everything to obtain his prize and its many secrets, including his life or even that of his crew.

meh

bland adventure story with a large cast of underdeveloped and 1 dimensional characters. the main character, drake, is one of the worst characters despite receiving the most attention. not bad, but definitely not good.

indiana jones in space

this is an odd on folks. the story as is indiana jones in space trying to steal a blackfort. now the idea that a single blackstone fortress is sitting in known space and has been immediately claimed by chaos or eldari or imperial forces is thin already. but then they add in the fort is alive in some way almost omnipotent in some regards. other wish fun tale. nothing ground breaking or lore busting. fun read

Interesting story twists, but

Too many 40K books fall into the trap of “if I just put in a bunch of weird shit it will be okay”. Yeah, no. And I know that “realism” isn’t exactly the standard here, but even within the context of 40k this doesn’t make sense. This is a shame, I had high hopes.

The best 40k book in a while

oddball characters in the grimdark universe of 40k up against an alien unknowable threat? unironically one of the best 40k books I've listened to in a while. Everyone has different backstories, interesting motivations, and conflicting goals. Really great stuff.

Like a tie in novel to a boardgame

As a fan if the 41st millennium, this is just ok. The story has obvious bullet points it had to hit, and the writer seemed too constrained. Good for lore junkies or someone who wants a treasure hunt. If frugal give it a pass. I am shameless and will buy the next one too.

Awful narration

I tried and tried again to listen to this book but the narration was just not for me, I found it grating and insulting to be honest, I have also purchased the book on kindle so will read it instead of listening

Enjoyed this one

Ive long found the idea of Blackstone Fortresses fascinating and this was very interesting for that reason. There was one part early on which I found a bit jarring where a character arrives somewhere without a lot of explanation (trying for no spoilers) but it makes sense later. All in all good though, would recommend and hope there's sequals a plenty, its a great environment and I liked the characters.
