Publisher's Summary
Empathy is the ability to perceive and understand other people's thoughts and feelings. Initially, it is only a question of pure perception and understanding of what is perceived. What happens after that is a reaction to what is perceived. The reactions to the empathically perceived mostly show up in the form of feelings such as pity, sadness, joy, fear or happiness. This also makes it clear what empathy is not: empathy is not a feeling, but only the ability to recognize other people's feelings.
Empathy is often referred to as compassion. Strictly speaking, this is not correct since compassion is already the reaction to what is perceived as empathic.
