Publisher's Summary

What could cause a mother to believe that giving away her newborn baby is her only option? Cathy Glass is about to find out. From author of Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller Damaged comes a harrowing and moving memoir about tiny Harrison, left in Cathy's care, and the potentially fatal family secret of his beginnings.

When Cathy is first asked to foster one-day old Harrison her only concern is if she will remember how to look after a baby. But upon collecting Harrison from the hospital, Cathy realises she has more to worry than she thought when she discovers that his background is shrouded in secrecy.

She isn't told why Harrison is in foster care and his social worker says only a few are aware of his very existence, and if his whereabouts became known his life, and that of his parents, could be in danger. Cathy tries to put her worries aside as she looks after Harrison, a beautiful baby, who is alert and engaging. Cathy and her children quickly bond with Harrison although they know that, inevitably, he will eventually be adopted.

But when a woman Cathy doesn't know starts appearing in the street outside her house acting suspiciously, Cathy fears for her own family's safety and demands some answers from Harrison's social worker. The social worker tells Cathy a little but what she says is very disturbing . How is this woman connected to Harrison and can she answer the questions that will affect Harrison's whole life?

Good but mainly uneventful

I love Cathy Glass books, however, this one had little in the way of gripping events except when she had a little girl for respite care who was sharing horrible memories from her mom and step dad's home. I am aware Cathy's point of view is limited when it comes to the horrible events going on outside of fostering, the events usually only being shared by the child, so the fact that this was a story of a newborn would obviously leave the story absent of why I love reading Cathy's books. On the other hand it was nice to not put myself under all that heartbreaking torment you usually find in her books. On to the next one. :)

A baby's cry

I enjoyed the book. I wasn't crazy with the different stories going on in one book.

Good story but a bit slow

I really like this narrator and the stories of Cathy Glass. However, I found this one a bit slow. The same story could have been told in half the time. This is a happy story, it is not upsetting as Damaged is.

Excellent

I just finished this book. I have to admit I was surprised at the reason Rehanna felt she had to be so secretive about her baby. I was imagining all sorts of awful things as I read, but when the real reason was revealed, I was taken aback... As always, the narration was excellent! Keep the stories coming!

Cathy Glass is fantastic.

This is a very sweet story that shines light on what a foster carer can do - miracles! If it wasn't for Cathy's support and decision making, this story could've turned out differently. I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter.

Mind numbly boring.

Could only get half way through this book. First time I even abandoned a book but I could not listen to one more minute.

A Beautiful and heart rending story

Cathy Glass has a realistic way of narrating events that draws you into the characters and their situations. Giving the right amount of sensitivity to the issues being addressed. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this audiobook and will recommend this to anybody who wants to get into fostering.

A very emotional and engaging read.

I'd never read any books by Cathy Glass before. I don't usually look at covers much, but the image on this one and the title immediately made me want to read the book. Not only do we learn about the mother-baby bond, but also a lot about the foster caring system in the UK. the plot , flow and language were natural and believable, and every character was realistic. This audiobook will stay with me forever. It's one of my favourites!
