Publisher's Summary

When Reece arrives at Cathy's door aged 7 years old, he has already passed through the hands of four different carers in four weeks. As the details of his short life emerge, it becomes clear that to help him, Cathy will face her biggest challenge yet.

The latest title from the author of Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller Damaged.

Reece is the last of six siblings to be fostered. Having been in care for four months his aggressive and disruptive behaviour has seen him passed from carer to carer. Although only 7, he has been excluded from school, and bites people so often that his mother calls him 'Sharky'.

Cathy wants to find the answers for Reece's distressing behaviour, but he has been sworn to secrecy by his mother, and will not tell them anything. As the social worker prepares for the final hearing, he finds five different files on Reece's family, and is incredulous that he had not been removed from them as a baby. When the darkest of family secrets is revealed to Cathy, Reece's behaviour suddenly starts to make sense, and together they can begin to rebuild his life.

compelling

Any additional comments?

Couldn't stop listening!

It was impossible to unplug from the author's care and dedication, as well as her specific behavior-improving techniques, as she helped troubled Reese make his way into his future. Reese's difficult journey was far more compelling than the terrible secrets that explain his behavior.

The book's great hope for the future of severely abused children, who are fighting a world that has treated them terribly, makes it a wonderful audible listen. The book did also leave behind considerable frustration with generationally dysfunctional adults whose children are washed up into the system only after much damage has already been done.

The book also makes it clear that, unfortunately, Reese's deeply disturbing secrets are not uniquely unusual among foster care children. I learned a great deal listening to this book.

Great all the way around

Great Audible performance. Was better than watching a good television show. Also, felt I learned some tips for parenting, just listening to how she kept her boundaries. Additionally, you see the humanity in all the characters, even ones that may seem toxic... with a greater understanding of what they’ve been through, it’s easier to feel compassion instead of dismissal. Well done. Listened to this book as it was chosen for the book club for a volunteer organization I participate in that works with foster children. What is hard to have what actually happened to Reese and his past left as just a mystery, however I imagine that could be fairly true to real life in many circumstances. We don’t always get to know. Would recommend!

Pick a different one!

It was okay but no real climactic moments. I prefer when the author suffered the abuse and is now doing well. If I head to hear i made sure I made eye contact was almost torturous. If you want an incredible story read Child C by Christopher Spry!

Excellent

I love Cathy’s books. I enjoy hearing about how she uses compassion, kindness, clear boundaries and level headed guidance to help the children who come in to her care. She and her family open their hearts and home and are full of love. Denica reads the books beautifully, at a lovely pace and with clear character definition. In this book she stood by Reece and loved him so much. As usual an excellent book.
