恋ゆえに悲劇は起き。愛ゆえに成仏できず。欲ゆえに人は死ぬ。本当に怖いのは幽霊か。はたまた人か。この怪談噺の語源は中国明代の小説集に収められた一話に基づき、三遊亭圓朝によって落語の演目化されたものである。本編は小説家田中貢太郎により怪談噺の本筋である、お露の幽霊が萩原新三郎に憑き殺すところまでをテンポ良く描いている。■あらすじ-旗本飯島平左衛門の美しき娘、お露は浪人である萩原新三郎と相思相愛になるが、恋患いから病に臥し、命を落とす。それを伝え聞いた新三郎は来る日も来る日も念仏を唱えて過ごしていた。ひとつき後の盆、十三日の夜。新三郎が縁側で月を眺めていると、生垣の向こうから「カラコン、カラコン」と云う下駄の音が聞こえてきた。やるともなしにその方へ眼をやった新三郎に、声を掛けてきたのは、美しい女を連れた年増の女中。死んだはずのお米だった。「今日は盆のことでございますから、彼方此方あっちこっちおまいりをして、晩おそく帰るところでございます」死んだと思っていたお露とお米が今眼の前にいる。新三郎は取りも直さず裏口から二人を自室に招き入れるのだった。それから毎晩のように泊まりに来る女の声に、孫店に住む使用人伴蔵が気づいたのだった。そこで、高窓に背伸びををして覗く伴蔵が眼にしたのは。島田髷の腰から下のない骨と皮ばかりの女が、青白い顔に鬢びんの毛をふり乱して、それが蝋燭ろうそくのような手をさしのべて新三郎の頸くびにからませている姿だった。
