Es handelt sich aber um Alexander Holder, den Teilhaber der zweitgrößten Londoner Privatbank Holder & Stevenson, für den eilige Fußmärsche einfach nur ungewohnt sind. Gestern ersuchte ihn im Büro eine der prominentesten Personen Englands, um ein kurzfristiges Darlehen über 50.000 Pfund zu erbitten, das schon am Montag wieder zurückgezahlt werden soll.

Unverhofft wurde Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson die Ehre zuteil, auf einem Vergnügungs-Raumschiff einchecken zu dürfen. Trotz herzlicher Begrüßung durch den eitlen Kapitän, ahnt Holmes schon bevorstehende Detektivarbeit. Tatsächlich ereigneten sich an Bord Fälle vorübergehenden Wahnsinns.

Mit letzter Kraft schafft es Watson schwimmend an die rettende Küste, während Holmes im Meer vermisst bleibt. Auf dem Fußmarsch zur Polizeistation schwört sich Watson, den Fall auch allein zu lösen und Rache an den Verantwortlichen zu nehmen.

Auf der Fahrt nach Cornwall rekapitulieren Holmes und Watson den bisherigen Verlauf ihrer Ermittlungen, die sie an verschiedene historische und mythologische Orte führten. Sie stellen eine Hypothese über eine Verbindung zum Orden der Tempelritter auf.

Die Ultimo-1 treibt menschenleer im All. Wo ist die Crew geblieben? Da ein gefährlicher Auftrag bevorstand, mussten Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson das Schiff vor einiger Zeit verlassen. Nun holt sie die Galaktische Union wieder an Bord, um das Rätsel der Verschwundenen zu lösen.

Holmes und Watson suchen an der Atlantikküste eine Meereshöhle auf, die der Legende nach als Wohnort des Druiden und Zauberers Merlin diente. Zwar können die beiden den nächsten Hinweis entdecken, doch als die Flut einsetzt, geraten sie in Lebensgefahr.

Der Gasangriff auf die Konferenzteilnehmer im Kloster sorgt für Chaos und Krankenhausaufenthalte. Dann zeigt sich aber, dass es sich dabei nur um ein Ablenkungsmanöver handelte.

Auf dem Hammersmith-Friedhof suchen Holmes, Lestrade und Watson die finale Konfrontation mit dem letzten Täter, doch es kommt anders. Was zunächst nach einer glücklichen Fügung aussieht, entpuppt sich allerdings als Falle.

Im Krankenhaus weichen Watson und Holmes nicht von Marys Seite, während Lestrade den verhafteten Sommerset ins Polizeigefängnis überstellt. Als Mary endlich das Bewusstsein wiedererlangt, kann sie sich an nichts erinnern.

Nachdem Holmes die Hafenarbeiter erfolgreich aufgestachelt hat, zünden diese das Schiff “Hephaistos” aus Palermo an. Damit geraten die Dinge ein wenig außer Kontrolle, doch die Diebe betrachten die Aufgabe als gelöst. Die Gebeine werden zurückgegeben.

Der Familien- und Fortpflanzungsminister der Union beauftragt Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson mit Ermittlungen in einem diffizilen Scheidungsfall. Ein Ex-Raumfahrer wähnt seine Gattin von bösen Einflüssen aus dem All besessen. Die schöne Frau hat es besonders Dr. Watson angetan.

Im Süden von Wales besuchen Holmes und Watson den mutmaßlichen früheren Standort Camelots und der Tafelrunde. Der nächste Hinweis befindet sich jedoch nicht in den römischen oder mittelalterlichen Ruinen, sondern in einem Pub.

Einer der Diebe, der sich als Abgesandter des Organisierten Verbrechens aus Neapel entpuppt, trifft sich mit Holmes und Watson am Strand außerhalb Baris. Dort stellt er im Gegenzug für auf einen Gefallen die Herausgabe der Reliquien in Aussicht.

Die Gebeine des Heiligen Nikolaus werden aus der Pathologie des Hospizes gestohlen, da sich die wachhabenden Polizisten von zwei Männern in Mönchskutten übertölpeln lassen. Die Diebe übermitteln eine Nachricht an Holmes.

Ein Deserteur war dreist genug, die Union zu bestehlen. Doch er hat weder mit Sherlock Holmes noch Dr. Watson gerechnet. Beide heften sich samt Kampfroboter an seine Fersen. Auf ihrer Suche treffen sie eine Archäologin samt Assistentin und fragen sich, ob den Damen zu trauen ist.

Holmes, Watson und Lestrade gelingt es nicht, die bedrohten Männer rechtzeitig in Sicherheit zu bringen. Lediglich eine Zielperson bleibt verschont. Abermals muss der inhaftierte Täter aufgesucht werden, der den Ermittlern tatsächlich einen Hinweis liefert.

Holmes und Watson fahren zum legendenumwobenen Berg Snowdon. Noch vor Einbruch der Dunkelheit müssen sie den Gipfel erreichen, um den dort vermuteten Hinweis zu finden. Sie wissen jedoch nicht, dass sie bereits erwartet werden.
