Critic Reviews

"One of the most enjoyable marriages of the fantasy and mystery genres on the shelves.” (Cinescape)

“Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry’s wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot." (Booklist)

Too good for words. I am so invested in this series and whilst this book may not be my fave out of the ones I have read/listened to so far, I would STILL give it 5 stars. Jims imagery is so intense that I can create fully realised characters and scenes in my mind! Love

Captivating

Just like the other books. A great story, very well read. Filled with everything I expect from a Dresden book suspense, mystery, a bit of gore, magical fights and killing off lots and lots of bad guys.

Still a great story

If you could sum up Proven Guilty in three words, what would they be?

Action, wit, sarcasm, loving all things Jim Butcher and as for narrator James Masters has ruined me for all other narrators. His adaptation to different characters and quality work have left other narators an anti cliamax, sigh

The previous 4 books were independent stories.
New characters and worse demons appeared and the realms of the faeries and the courts were explored along with their nasty, devious queens/kings and knights.
Thomas was a find, although whether he has been an asset is to be given some thought.

Book 8, developed a new plot to open new direction for future books. It again tickles the readers/ listeners to move forward to find out who is manipulating behind the scenes and for what purpose.
Harry is always on a knife edge, lunging in and out of danger. He’s being threatened by all sides.
I love the way he manages to think of something and scrape through to live another day.

Wizard PI Harry Dresden is now a warden for the White Council and he’s disquieted by the Council’s execution of a young warlock. Worse still, the Council’s war of attrition with the Vampire Red Court is taking a deadly toll. Before he can come to terms with any of that, he’s embroiled in a series of nightmarish murders seemingly conducted by well-known horror movie characters. Just when he thinks he’s identified the culprits, circumstances show that things are not quite as they seem and when a friend’s daughter is kidnapped and taken to the Winter Faerie Court, Harry and his allies must risk everything to get her back.

Phew, even by Harry Dresden standards, this was so fast paced. I’ve admired the wry humour, Harry’s perpetual ennui, and the world-building over this series, but I hadn’t stepped back to admire the descriptive, heart-stopping action scenes—they are so well-written and compelling—this book has some great examples! I also hadn’t acknowledged the complex political canvas that this world operates in, where different councils and courts form alliances, stab each other in the back, and generally vie for the upper hand. The White Council alone has its squabbles and suspected traitors and they’re supposedly the good guys—no wonder Harry tries to avoid them as much as possible! It all makes for a rich tapestry which envelopes Harry and his friends and often threatens to overwhelm or suffocate them. I did find Harry a little creepy in his interactions with Molly, I hope this is the last time I have to say this. 🎧 US actor James ‘Spike’ Marsters performs his heart out on the audio, channeling a vast array of characters and creatures!

Compelling supernatural action & magical politics!

The further I get into the series, the more and more I want to keep going, I don't know how Jim does it but I just cannot get enough, James also does a hell of a job breathing life into the characters male and female alike, whether its the great writing of just great voicing I'll let you decide on that one.
