About this listen

Wizard for hire Harry Dresden has to track down the things that go bump in the night in this novel in Jim Butcher's #1 New York Times bestselling series.

There’s no love lost between Harry Dresden, the only wizard in the Chicago phone book, and the White Council of Wizards, who find him brash and undisciplined. But war with the vampires has thinned their ranks, so the Council has drafted Harry as a Warden and assigned him to look into rumors of black magic in the Windy City.

As Harry adjusts to his new role, another problem arrives in the form of the tattooed and pierced daughter of an old friend—all grown up and already in trouble. Her boyfriend is the only suspect in what looks like a supernatural assault straight out of a horror film. Malevolent entities that feed on fear are loose in Chicago, but it’s all in a day’s work for a wizard, his faithful dog, and a talking skull named Bob...©2007 Jim Butcher; (P)2009 Penguin

Critic Reviews

Praise for the Dresden Files

“Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer starring Philip Marlowe.”—Entertainment Weekly

“Fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Tanya Huff will love this series.”—Midwest Book Review

“Superlative.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“One of the most enjoyable marriages of the fantasy and mystery genres on the shelves.”—Cinescape

“Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry’s wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot.”—Booklist (starred review)

“What’s not to like about this series?...It takes the best elements of urban fantasy, mixes it with some good old-fashioned noir mystery, tosses in a dash of romance and a lot of high-octane action, shakes, stirs, and serves.”—SF Site

“A tricky plot complete with against-the-clock pacing, firefights, explosions, and plenty of magic. Longtime series fans as well as newcomers drawn by the SciFi Channel’s TV series based on the novels should find this supernatural mystery a real winner.”—Library Journal

“What would you get if you crossed Spenser with Merlin? Probably you would come up with someone very like Harry Dresden, wizard, tough guy and star of [the Dresden Files].”—The Washington Times

Too good for words. I am so invested in this series and whilst this book may not be my fave out of the ones I have read/listened to so far, I would STILL give it 5 stars. Jims imagery is so intense that I can create fully realised characters and scenes in my mind! Love

Captivating

Just like the other books. A great story, very well read. Filled with everything I expect from a Dresden book suspense, mystery, a bit of gore, magical fights and killing off lots and lots of bad guys.

Still a great story

If you could sum up Proven Guilty in three words, what would they be?

Action, wit, sarcasm, loving all things Jim Butcher and as for narrator James Masters has ruined me for all other narrators. His adaptation to different characters and quality work have left other narators an anti cliamax, sigh

The previous 4 books were independent stories.
New characters and worse demons appeared and the realms of the faeries and the courts were explored along with their nasty, devious queens/kings and knights.
Thomas was a find, although whether he has been an asset is to be given some thought.

Book 8, developed a new plot to open new direction for future books. It again tickles the readers/ listeners to move forward to find out who is manipulating behind the scenes and for what purpose.
Harry is always on a knife edge, lunging in and out of danger. He’s being threatened by all sides.
I love the way he manages to think of something and scrape through to live another day.
